A 34-year-old hakwon (cram school) teacher Kang has recently been sentenced to one year in prison after being found guilty of assaulting and molesting his 28-year-old blind date 'A' after spending 400,000 won (approx. $365 USD) on her.
The incident occurred in January 2013, when Kang and 'A' were on their second date. Towards the end of the date, Kang drank some alcohol and expressed his desire to go back to 'A's house with her. He forced 'A' into a taxi and cursed at her, saying, "I spent around 400,000 won since I've met you, but you're not going to spend one penny?" as well as, "Your father isn't around and you behave that way?" When 'A' cried and asked to be let out, Kang grabbed her by the arms and slapped her to get her to stop resisting.
'A' informed prosecution that she needed three weeks of treatment to recover from her injuries. She further stated that Kang also sexually harassed her, forcibly touching her thigh and chest.
The Department of Justice explained that they decided to punish Kang harshly due to his actions as well as his behavior during trial. They stated, "During his trial, Kang blamed 'A' for wearing heavy makeup and a short skirt, drinking with him, going to a club with him, and then giving a false testimony." They continued, "Kang didn't self-reflect and wasn't embarrassed over his crime and he did not take any action for the victim's injuries."
They concluded, "As the victim is suffering psychological trauma and requested for severe punishment, it is inevitable that Kang would receive this sentence."
