The accident occurred at 10:17 AM when one car slid across the slippery road, hit the guardrail, and came to a halt in the middle of the highway. Although the passengers of the first car were able to exit the vehicle and wait on the side of the road for help, other drivers had difficulty driving around them, leading to a chain reaction of rear-ending car accidents. The very beginning of the car crash can be seen in the clip above.
In the end, 35 cars, 7 trucks, and 1 bus became involved in the car crash. 23 people were submitted to four different hospitals, some with serious injuries.
The fire department explained that the crash likely occurred due to the weather conditions. While the road was slippery with its layer of snow, the weather was also foggy, making it difficult for drivers to see one another or react in time.
