TaeTiSeo

As previously reported, TaeTiSeo, the sub-unit of the popular group, Girls' Generation, has graced fans with yet another comeback.  They're back with their second mini-album, 'Holler.'  Let's take a look at this highly anticipated album from the queens of K-Pop.

The album starts off with their title track, "Holler."  This track starts with a similar 'Moulin Rouge' cabaret feel that we saw with their previous hit, "Twinkle"—especially because the track starts with a host saying, "Ladies and Gentleman, can you hear me?"  The song progresses into a cool hybrid of the 60s and modern day pop.  What I like most about this track is that the strong vocals of the three members are really showcased in this upbeat track.  The lyrics are light and simple--for example, the repetitive, "holler, holler, holler," in the chorus is easy to remember (although not as easy to sing) and catchy. I also believe this track is a remake of J-Pop artist Mizrock's "Hello Me!" which was released back in 2007.

In addition, SMTOWN released their long awaited music video for "Holler" on September 17 through their YouTube channel. The concept and originality of the music video are not up to par with my standards for TaeTiSeo.  The graphics at the beginning of the album were random with the *boing* sounds and the girls randomly disappearing.  The theme of the music video was lacking, as well—I think the theme was a montage of music through the eras.  However, it was a little choppy to see Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun in a classy palace, then to see Tiffany in a modern car in the next scene.  That aside, the quality of the music video is fully there.  They did not hesitate to go all out on the glitz and glam.  There were so many outfit changes that I lost count after five, but the girls looked absolutely flawless in all of them.  My favorite was the diamond embellished dresses—with the lighting, they all looked like goddesses.  So, overall, the video was aesthetically appealing.  But of course, you can't go wrong with a video that has TaeTiSeo in it.

Now, back to the album review…

"Holler" transitions into "Adrenaline."  With the classic drum beat and clap, this song takes me back to the 20s flapper era—if I knew how to swing dance, I would definitely be swing dancing to this track.  I love the lead up to the bubble-gum sounding chorus—it gets your adrenaline pumping. This actually is probably my favorite track on the album.  It's a solid track. However, "Adrenaline" appears to be another remake of the Velvet Angels song from 2008.

TaeTiSeo slows it down with their next track, "Whisper."  The R&B slow jam backtrack matches perfectly with their smooth vocals.  Although this is a different sound than we're used to hearing from Girls' Generation, I love it.  They sound sultry and innocent at the same time.

"Stay" threw me off at the beginning because I was expecting to hear another 90s slow jam.  However, the beat picks up with synthesizers for a classic 80s pop sound (although most 80s tracks definitely did not have a rap break like this track does).  I see myself spinning in circles with a high side-ponytail, a flair skirt, and neon leg warmers when I hear "Stay"—maybe at a roller rink.  This song is a fun, feel good track.

The album goes lovey-dovey with "Only U."  This is a classic "you're the only one for me" track—the lyrics are touching and sweet.  What sets this track apart from the norm is the strong vocals of Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun.  The piano in the back track also gives off a very Michelle Branch sound, and who doesn't love some Michelle Branch?

The final track, "EYES," is an up-tempo song with saxophone loops layered in with a pop beat.  There have been many comparisons to the popular track, "Problem," by Ariana Grande with fans wondering where Tiffany's "Iggy Azalea rap" was.  That aside, it's a catchy tune.  I especially love the "E-Y-E-S" lyrics—I'm not 100% sure why, but I do.

Overall, I think, 'Holler,' is a solid album—TaeTiSeo had strong vocals on each track and experimented with backtracks from all eras of popular music on this single mini-album.  I also think they did a great job of separating the unique sound of their sub-group to the up-beat dance tracks that Girls' Generation as a group is known for.  They have their own sound, and I'm a fan.
