Tablo revealed how he came up with "Umbrella", explaining, "The song 'Umbrella' was made at DJ Tukutz' house while I was eating jokbal (pig's trotters). The melody and lyrics for the first verse, 'Before I even realized the rain gathered around my feet,' suddenly came to my head while I was eating jokbal. So I sang it to DJ Tukutz, who I was eating with at the time [and told him], 'Isn't this melody so delicious?' I mean, 'Isn't this melody good and chewy?' Tukutz liked it as well, and we went straight down to our studio and made the song. Then we waited to ask Younha for a featuring."
When asked why they chose Younha to feature in the song, Tablo shared, "It's a sad song, but I didn't want it to sound too sad. Younha's voice sounds like a nice person who goes through a major hardship for the first time."
