HIGH SCHOOL: LOVE ON EPISODE 6
A textbook case of wrist grab
Recap:
Last episode, we saw Woo Hyun execute that timeless K-drama maneuver, the wrist grab. Seul Bi embraces him, then runs off. Sung Yeol chides him for this, telling Woo Hyun that confessing to someone when they're not ready is cheating. Ye Na sits weeping, rejected by Woo Hyun, and Sung Yeol comforts Seul Bi. Grandma packs a bag, closes the shop, and tells Woo Hyun she's going on vacation. Reluctantly, Grandma goes to the hospital to be examined, only to find out she has to be hospitalized. Ji Hye tries to reconcile with Sung Yeol, acknowledging that she's just a step mom, but will try harder to be a real mom, and agrees to let him see his birth mother whenever he wants. Seul Bi and Woo Hyun run the business while Grandma is gone, making deliveries and eating a picnic lunch.
Woo Hyun researches "how to get closer to someone you like." The suggestion he uses, a horror movie, falls flat when Woo Hyun looks away and gets scared. Meanwhile the mysterious angel-turned-human shows up, pulls various pranks, and Sunbae follows him. Seul Bi receives a "black book" from Sunbae, the book that angels use to tell which human is going to die next. If she accepts the book, then she can be an angel again. She has a week to decide. Ye Na and Young Eun try to pull a prank on Seul Bi which backfires. Seul Bi heads to the store and finds the store has been put up for sale. She contemplates her black book again, but a call from Ye Na interrupts Seul Bi. Ye Na is apparently suicidal about not being able to date Woo Hyun. When Seul Bi goes off to buy water and tissues for her distraught friend, Ye Na plants her own cellphone inside the purse and talks to Young Eun about it. A plan has been set in motion...
A prank gone awry
My take:
So Grandma finally goes to the hospital. My only issue is that she's hiding it from Woo Hyun and Seul Bi. I realize she doesn't want to worry them, but they're going to find out eventually...maybe when she dies? I don't know. She might be waiting for the right time, but selling the shop is a rather unmistakable sign that something's going on. Since that's their home as well as a shop, I hope the money from the sale can be used to find someplace else to live...
And Seul Bi has a choice to make. In a week. Wow, that's a bit sudden. Given there are 14 more episodes to go, I can't really see her making the choice to be an angel so suddenly, unless they go to a format of covering a half-day each episode. I can't really see it. It is interesting, though. If she doesn't go back, then what's the reason? Maybe it's the fact that she is happy there and is caught between two guys who care about her.
The black book glows when she touches it
Speaking of which, I think the triangle is fun. I'm going to ignore the obvious differences in their ages as the boys from INFINITE are supposed to be high school age in this drama. I think the reason she ran off is because she now knows Woo Hyun is into her and she's into him, but she also likes Sung Yeol. Both relationships have a lot to recommend them. Sung Yeol is much less brooding when he's with her, and I think she brings out the best in him. Woo Hyun is less needy, I think, but his feelings are still intense. Were I a girl (and I'm most assuredly not), it would be a hard choice. If you were Seul Bi, who would you pick?
The angel-turned-human showed up again this episode, acting far more strangely than he had before. He cut the power at the shop where Seul Bi and Woo Hyun lived while the two were watching a horror movie. That's far more active and involved than he's been thus far, and he even cold-clocks Sung Yeol's father while he was breaking up an incident involving Jae Suk bullying another kid. I'm guessing the main reason for his actions would be to help out the kids. The only reason I can see for punching a cop out is that Jae Suk was among the bullies. But why this particular group of kids? Does it have something to do with Seul Bi? And what is Sunbae's interest in him? It's obvious now he can see Sunbae too. And another question: why does it seem like he's stark raving mad?
A movie date by candlelight
It's both frustrating and wonderful that this show leaves us with a cliffhanger and questions. Wonderful because it leaves me wanting to see the next episode, but frustrating because I have to wait a week. When I first got into K-drama, the shows had already completed their run, so if I wanted to veg out on a drama in the evenings, I could and would eventually get to the end. Can't do that here! Ah, well...stay with me. There's lots more to come!
