Are you a gamer? A professional keyboard-smashing, mouse-clicking, virtual azz-kicking rage machine? Luckily for you, universities across the world are starting to recognize your talent!
Chung-Ang University, located in Seoul, South Korea, has recently announced that it would be accepting eSports applicants into its Department of Sports Science starting next year. The school has thus opened its doors to gamers throughout the nation, offering them a chance to ascend to the rank of gaming scholar. (Insert chorus of "CHALLENGE ACCEPTED" here.) Gamer applicants will now be able to study alongside athletes that play more traditional sports such as soccer, basketball, baseball, etc., redefining what it means to play a professional sport (alongside the Quidditch players, of course).
Korea is known for its thriving gaming culture. You know how crazy sports fans can get? Well Esports fans can get just as hyped, and in Korea, there are tournaments held on both national and international levels to celebrate all kinds of online, multiplayer games. Korea itself has a reputation of being home to some of the most skilled and dedicated players for games like Starcraft, Defense of the Ancients (DotA), and League of Legends (LoL).
See that above? It's picture proof that e-sports is big money. That was taken at the 2013 LoL World Champions tournament at a sold out Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. Teams that win tournaments like these can earn prize money in the millions (and don't forget about the sponsorship money). Yeah, remember when your parents said you should do something more productive with your time? Should've never listened. I regret all the things. Then again, with my gaming skills I probably would've never amounted to much...
Anyways, this gaming craze isn't just isolated in Korea. Even a school in the United States, Robert Morris University, has announced that they will start giving out scholarships to LoL players. Hey, who knows! Maybe your hours upon hours of gaming will pay off someday, and you can study your hobby and make it into a career. Do what you like all your life! That's the dream. You just have to hit start and play.
