TRIANGLE EPISODE 10

Young Dal aims to cheat at the Daejung Casino, but the presence of Jung Hee as the dealer stops him as well as a call from Dong Soo warning him that Yang Ha knows about his plans to cheat and intends to arrest him. Young Dal plays an honest game and wins big. After the game, Jung Hee texts Young Dal, "Gambling is scary to me," and asks him to stop doing it. Shin Hye asks Dong Soo about joining Daejung and the former detective informs her that he intends to destroy them from the inside. Young Dal confronts Madame Jang and Lady Kim about their disclosing to Daejung that he would be cheating and warns them not to provoke him. Yang Ha makes a deal with Chairman Go to give him shares in Daejung and a stake in the resort if he gets rid of Young Dal. We end with Young Dal in jail waiting to be sentenced, fingered as the owner of the illegal casino...

Dong Soo is now Director of Security Management at Daejung, the company that Yang Ha's family owns. He still looks after Young Dal, which is nice to see. He's taken on almost a fatherly role to Young Dal, but apparently that does not extend to Yang Ha since Dong Soo's working to bring Daejung down. The writers have taken a step back from his character in this episode; he pops up here and there, but apparently his plans will take some time to set in motion. His former partner in the police department has also found Dong Soo's mother, which sets it up for us to learn more about him. Apparently she bailed when the father was killed.

Playing without cheating.

Another character that we don't see much of this episode is Shin Hye. I get the feeling, kind of like with Dong Soo, that they both made really quick appearances here with fairly significant reveals to fit the shorter amount of time spent with them. Shin Hye talks with her father about wanting a divorce. He doesn't seem to grant it, but he does express some regret at forcing her into a marriage she didn't want. We also didn't get anything of her and Dong Soo. It's almost like their relationship didn't really change, although it has very clearly.

If I thought Siwan's performance as a young chaebol ass was a bit understated, he really pulled out the stops this episode. I actually find myself looking forward to seeing Yang Ha now since he's got a more active role to play; he's making deals of his own and becoming a more complex character. The writers have pulled out the "crazy chaebol" trope, and Siwan plays it to the hilt in this installment. He replays the CCTV footage, trying to find some hint of a con job that will allow him to get rid of Young Dal and catches our young thug looking at the camera with a knowing smirk. This drives him over the edge and he goes berserk, pushing things off his desk, throwing more items and essentially destroying half his office. When he stands and composes himself, there's a look on his face that screams "I'm nuts!" I really hope that was intentional because the overall effect is seriously unsettling.

Just one of the crazy expressions contorting Yang Ha's face..

Jung Hee figures a little more prominently in this episode. She's learning to stand up for herself, which is nice. The mean female dealer rants at her for favoring Young Dal when she deals, but Jung Hee stands her ground and tells her to shut up or she's going to complain to management. That seems to put the mean girl in her place. I like that. I also enjoyed her texting Young Dal and putting him at arm's length. While I like them together, I also think it really adds dimension to her character; maybe she's learning a sense of her own self-worth?  Last episode she mentioned to Young Dal that she was no better than him. Maybe she's had time to think about that.

'Triangle' is quickly shaping up to be one of my favorite shows. They serve up enough twists to keep me guessing and they've started to move the scenes along faster. They used to linger too long in the early episodes, but this one moved at a nice speed. It has become what the trailer promised: suspenseful.
