Korean Communications Standards Commission member, Park Kyung Shin (40), is receiving heavy attention from the public due to "harmful" pictures that he uploaded on his personal blog.
Before we move on, the Korean Communications Standards Commission is in charge of regulating television shows, by deciding whether the material that is aired nationwide fits to their standards or is too harmful to be broadcast. It also regulates other areas of media as well.
On the 20th, Park Kyung Shin uploaded artwork of a man's genitals on his personal blog. This was in response to another picture of a man's genitals that was uploaded on the internet, which was taken down by officials that believed it to be obscene material (pornography) instead of art.
Shortly after, Park Kyung Shin's picture was taken down as well, which lead him to publicly state, "The commission took down material that was uploaded from a member of the commission itself. Because such an event had never happened in the past, it is gaining much press coverage and the visitor count for the blog has significantly risen. I uploaded such material because I wanted to make a point that the administration organization that calls itself the Korean Communications Standards Commission ruthlessly bans and takes down material uploaded by citizens without the judgement of law, which is taking away their freedom and personal opinion."
On the 28th, the same blog became the number one searched on major internet portal sites. This was because Park Kyung Shin uploaded the painting, 'The Origin Of The World', by French painter Gustave Courbet (shows a close-up of a women's genitals).
A message was left with the painting, which stated, "The pictures that I uploaded was enough to bring a variety of reactions from many people. From what I know, such material is definitely not considered obscene by the law. The painting, although showing the women's genitals, is not intended to be viewed in a sexual manner. Although many may believe that such material is considered pornography, the law definitely states that it is not. However, the Korean Communications Standards Commission believe they are banning illegal material that do not fit under these standards. The painting is expressed as art, and can also be expressed in a strong political view. I am not an artist, but a legal expert. However, like an artist, who views such things as art, I am here to debate on the standards of obscene material that are presented by law."
As many of you know, from the past banning of certain material on broadcast and also in the music industry, that the Korean society is definitely stricter towards such matters than that of in the west. Considering that fact, what is your opinion on what Park Kyung Shin has stated?
Is he doing justice, or has he gone too far?
