"Life has gotten financially difficult. I've had to resort to doing fast food service and delivery." With gag programs being cut from various broadcast stations, gagmen have reportedly been sinking in hard times after they found themselves without a job. Serving in fast food restaurants has become the norm, while others are starting to resort to delivering food on scooters. Such a situation came about after MBC and SBS got rid of their gag programs for the new Fall lineup. Being able to claim one's profession as a gagman is becoming increasingly difficult during these times. Although many popular and influential gagmen are promoting as MCs on various variety programs, others are struggling to afford three meals a day. Hwang Young Jin, a former cast member of SBS's "People Looking for Laughter," stated, "We're able to make some income during festival seasons by being the MCs for a few events. However, after "People Looking for Laughter" was canceled, it's getting hard for me to even receive those same offers now. I got so frustrated that I began running in and out of different broadcast companies with print-outs of my resume profile." Although there are various gag performance spots available in college events, they aren't paying jobs. Still, gagmen stand on these stages for the pure joy of being able to make others laugh, even if isn't profitable. Despite such conditions, there are still gagmen hoping to achieve success. One gagman preparing for the KBS gagman recruitment exam stated, "I know a few that passed the recruitment exams for SBS and MBC and already debuted. Because of recent conditions, they're throwing away all of their past experiences and auditioning for KBS again." Source: Sports Seoul via Nate Photo: SBS
