The Democratic Party of Korea demands President Yoon Suk Yeol's resignation, threatens impeachment over martial law declaration

The Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) called for President Yoon Suk Yeol's immediate resignation on December 4, following his abrupt declaration and subsequent reversal of emergency martial law within six hours.

The party warned that if President Yoon refuses to step down voluntarily, they will proceed with impeachment. At the same time, the DPK announced it would postpone votes on impeachment motions against Auditor General Choi Jae Hae and Seoul Central District Prosecutor Lee Chang Soo to focus its efforts on the president’s resignation.

After an emergency meeting of its lawmakers, the DPK issued a resolution condemning President Yoon's actions.

The resolution stated, “President Yoon’s declaration of emergency martial law was a blatant constitutional violation,” and “He failed to meet any of the legal requirements necessary to justify such a measure.”

The party further asserted, “The declaration itself is null and void from the outset, constituting a grave violation of the Constitution. It is a serious act of rebellion and a clear ground for impeachment.

The DPK made its stance clear, “We will not tolerate President Yoon’s unconstitutional and anti-democratic actions. He must step down immediately.” The party warned, “If he does not resign, we will promptly begin impeachment proceedings in alignment with the will of the people. We are prepared to stand with the citizens to protect South Korea’s democracy and constitutional order.

During a press briefing after the meeting, DPK floor spokesperson Kang Yoo Jung outlined the potential timeline for impeachment. She explained, “If we act swiftly, the impeachment motion could be proposed today, reported tomorrow, and voted on 24 hours after that."

Spokesperson Kang highlighted the urgency of the matter, citing concerns over the possibility of another martial law declaration. She said, "There is no guarantee that martial law won’t be declared again. Many are deeply worried, which has led lawmakers to agree on the need to expedite the impeachment process."

In light of these developments, the DPK has decided to put the impeachment motions against Auditor General Choi and Prosecutor Lee on hold. This strategic shift allows the party to focus its energy on President Yoon’s resignation.

A DPK official explained, “We are reevaluating our legislative strategy in light of the recent events. While we will address these impeachment motions later, discussions regarding the Auditor General and Prosecutor’s cases are temporarily paused.

The impeachment motions against Choi and Lee, introduced by the DPK, were formally reported to the National Assembly on December 2. Under parliamentary rules, such motions must be voted on within 72 hours of being reported. If no vote is held by the afternoon of December 5, the motions will automatically expire.
