Netizens react after South Korea's National Intelligence Service arrests three alleged North Korean spies for staging anti-weapon protests

AKP STAFF

On August 6, South Korea's National Intelligence Service (NIS) arrested three of four alleged "North Korean spies" for staging anti-weapon protests.

According to Yonhap News, the NIS investigated these individuals for several years before requesting arrest warrants recently. The NIS allegedly found these four individuals to have violated South Korea's National Security Act, including laws against espionage.

The NIS, in collaboration with the National Police Agency (NPA), is currently accusing these individuals for meeting up with other "North Korean spies" in China and Cambodia, for receiving $20,000 in funds to organize support for North Korea, as well as for receiving orders from North Korea to petition the South Korean military's "plan to purchase American F-35A stealth fighters".

The anti-weapon protest organization allegedly founded by these "activists" have led campaigns calling for sizable national defense spending budget cuts.

Shortly after news of "alleged North Korean spies" made headlines, South Korea's netizens have reacted with comments like,

"There are still active spies... It's hard to believe."
"To think that there are spies or North Korea supporters hidden among us... I wonder how many of them are online."
"Spies will always exist, even if the war were to come to an end."
"Heol is this real... Sounds like some story from TV."
"But South Korea is right in the line of fire between China, Russia, Japan, North Korea, and the U.S. What Korean in their right mind would actively call for national defense spending cuts? We have the right to defend ourselves."
"South Koreans will never forget that the war isn't over, it's at a standstill."
"A group of people going out of their way to call for anti-weapons and anti-defense spending? They're definitely spies."
"If I see people out on the streets calling for anti-weapons and anti-defense, I'm gonna report them from now on."
"It's true that the Moon administration has been increasing defense spending like crazy, so they must have felt threatened."

I just hope this doesn't cause a reason to scapegoat North Koreans that have escaped that hell hole and now live in SK. I believe these were SK working for NK, correct me if I'm wrong?
