FTISLAND will continue as a duo in Korea and a trio overseas, with Choi Minhwan joining the overseas activities.
According to reports on March 3rd KST, Lee Hongki and Lee Jaejin will represent FTISLAND in domestic promotions, while Choi Minhwan will participate in overseas schedules.
Previously, Lee Hongki addressed the situation at "HONGGI B-DAY PARTY ‘XXX’" on March 2nd KST, sharing his thoughts on the decision. Regarding the group’s domestic duo and overseas trio setup, he stated, “There are many people who feel uncomfortable about this in Korea, and while everyone has their own opinions, I believe we should respect that. I will make sure there is more reflection. Someday, we will return as a trio in Korea as well.”
He continued, “I can guess what you all might say, and we are prepared for it. The most important thing is that FTISLAND needs a drummer. If he had truly done something unforgivable, we wouldn’t hesitate to take a different path. But since perspectives can vary, we made the decision that we need a drummer. That’s why we will stand strong as a duo in Korea and keep FTISLAND going.”
Lee Hongki also reassured fans, saying, “FTISLAND needs a skilled drummer. I feel very sorry for causing unnecessary concern. We faced a major crisis at the end of last year, but thanks to you, we were able to overcome it. I won’t bring this up to you again. The next decision is up to you. I’m truly sorry, but I hope we can still have fun together. We will work really hard.”
Choi Minhwan was previously embroiled in controversy in October last year when his ex-wife, Yulhee, accused him of soliciting prostitution. At the time, FNC Entertainment announced, “After in-depth discussions regarding FTISLAND’s future activities, we have decided to continue with a temporary two-member system (Lee Hongki and Lee Jaejin).”
In December, the police ruled that there was insufficient evidence to prosecute Choi Minhwan on charges of violating the Act on the Punishment of Sexual Crimes and indecent assault, leading to a dismissal of the case. Choi Minhwan later stated, “I sincerely apologize to the fans and my fellow members. From now on, I will strive to be more responsible and mature.”
Lee Hongki previously faced criticism for appearing to defend Choi Minhwan in a cryptic post on a global fan platform. He wrote, “It was a private matter between the two of them, and this is how things turned out. If he did something wrong, he should acknowledge it and sincerely apologize. But we should also be careful not to believe everything too easily. I have to protect and endure—because that’s who we are. What I can do is keep moving forward while taking the hits.”
Meanwhile, Lee Hongki and Lee Jaejin are set to perform at the Cherry Blossom Music Festival on March 30th at Jinhae Public Stadium.
