Yoo Ah In receives suspended sentence in drug case appeal.
Actor Yoo Ah In (real name Uhm Hong Sik), who was charged with habitual drug use, received a one-year prison sentence suspended for two years in his appeal trial.
On February 18 KST, the Seoul High Court’s Criminal Division 5 (Presiding Judges Kwon Soon Hyung, Ahn Seung Hoon, and Shim Seung Woo) delivered the verdict, overturning the initial court’s decision to imprison him.
Previously, in September 2023, Yoo Ah In had been sentenced to one year in prison, fined 2 million KRW, ordered to complete 80 hours of drug rehabilitation education, and required to pay an additional fine of 1.54 million KRW. At the time, he was taken into custody immediately after the ruling.
The charges against Yoo Ah In include 181 instances of using four different types of medical narcotics between September 2020 and March 2022. He also allegedly illegally obtained over 1,100 sleeping pills using another person’s name 44 times between May 2021 and August 2023.
Additionally, he and four accomplices, including an acquaintance named Choi, reportedly smoked marijuana in the United States and encouraged YouTuber Hairmon to do the same.
During the trial, prosecutors had demanded a four-year prison sentence, but the appeals court reduced the sentence to a suspended one-year term, meaning Yoo Ah In will not serve jail time unless he commits another offense during the probation period.
