The Netflix series 'Squid Game 2' has become a global sensation, ranking No. 1 in 93 countries, including the U.S., Japan, and France, for five consecutive days.
However, in Vietnam, the series is facing calls for a boycott, and the Vietnamese Film Authority has launched an official review.
According to local media, the controversy in Vietnam stems from a conversation between the main character Gi Hun's friend, Jeong Bae (portrayed by Lee Seo Hwan), and his junior, Dae Ho, a former marine. In the scene where Dae Ho (played by Kang Ha Neul) explains, "My father sent me to (the Marines) to toughen me up. He was a Vietnam War veteran," Jeong Bae responds, "Your father must be an honorable man."
Some Vietnamese viewers were outraged at this, accusing the show of touching on a sensitive historical issue. Vietnamese netizens argued that praising South Korean (ROK) soldiers involved in the Vietnam War as "honorable" was insensitive and inappropriate. The outrage quickly spread among Vietnamese users on social media, with calls for a boycott.
In response, the Vietnamese Film Authority initiated a review of 'Squid Game 2' and is expected to announce an official verdict soon.
