Actor Kim Jung Hyun (35) has publicly apologized for his controversial behavior during the 2018 MBC drama 'Time', marking his first direct statement on the matter in six years. According to an exclusive report by SPOTV News on January 2, Kim issued his apology during the recording of the '2024 KBS Drama Awards' on December 31, 2023.
The controversy, known as the 'His rude attitude scandal' dates back to July 2018. At the press conference for 'Time', Kim’s aloof demeanor and curt behavior drew criticism. He was notably seen brushing off his co-star Seohyun’s arm, leaving her visibly embarrassed.
His unenthusiastic expression and dismissive attitude throughout the event further fueled public outrage. Shortly after, Kim withdrew from the drama citing health issues, leaving Seohyun to carry the series to completion, earning praise for her professionalism and contributing to the drama's recognition as a 'well-made melodrama.'
Following his abrupt exit, allegations emerged that Kim’s behavior on set was influenced by then-girlfriend and actress Seo Ye Ji, who was accused of gaslighting him. Reports claimed that her influence led to Kim’s disrespectful conduct toward Seohyun and other female staff members. Kim and Seo Ye Ji both denied the allegations; however, the scandal still had a damaging impact on Kim's reputation.
In 2021, Kim penned a handwritten apology, acknowledging his faults. “Even I cannot forgive the person I was back then. I deeply regret my actions and wish I could undo them,” he wrote. “I caused unnecessary trouble due to personal issues, and for that, I offer my sincerest apologies without excuse.”
Kim resumed his acting career with projects like the drama 'Kokdu: Season of Deity' and the film 'Unforgivable'. However, the public’s perception of him remains divided, with many viewers still recalling his controversial actions during Time.
At the '2024 KBS Drama Awards', Kim addressed the controversy directly. Though he refrained from naming specific individuals, including Seohyun, he expressed deep remorse, saying, “I’ve had much to reflect on. It weighed heavily on my mind for a long time. I really wanted to apologize.” He bowed his head in a gesture of contrition.
Kim’s agency, Story J Company, confirmed the actor’s apology, stating, “Although he did not specify the individuals he was apologizing to, the apology is genuine.”
As Kim attempts to rebuild his career, his acknowledgment of past mistakes marks a significant step toward accountability, though it remains to be seen how the public will respond to his efforts.
