On December 11th, the Korean Film Council's integrated ticketing system reported that Firefighters crossed the 1 million viewer mark at 6:37 PM, eight days after its release.
This achievement surpasses the pace set by Escape, one of 2024's top five Korean box office hits, which took ten days to reach the same milestone.
A unique aspect of Firefighters is its "119 Won Donation Challenge," which donates 119 KRW from every paid ticket to the National Firefighters Hospital, scheduled to open in 2025.
Distributor By4M Studio announced that the initial target of 100 million KRW was met with the milestone, totaling 119 million KRW in donations. To commemorate the occasion, celebratory photos of lead actors Joo Won, Yoo Jae Myung, Kim Min Jae, and Jang Young Nam were released.
Since its release, The Firefighters has maintained the No. 1 spot in the Korean box office for eight consecutive days. Despite competition from new releases, the film continues to gain traction through strong word-of-mouth, with daily audience numbers increasing. The movie's performance in its second week has even surpassed its debut week, signaling potential for sustained long-term success.
Firefighters, which wrapped filming in 2020, faced delays after lead actor Kwak Do Won was embroiled in a DUI scandal in September 2022. The film’s eventual release and subsequent audience reception highlight its triumph over adversity.
Directed by Kwak Kyung Taek, Firefighters recounts the harrowing events of the 2001 Hongje-dong fire disaster. The film portrays the firefighters' relentless efforts to extinguish the flames and rescue survivors, despite operating in severely challenging conditions.
Currently showing in theaters nationwide, The Firefighters continues to captivate audiences with its compelling story and heartfelt tribute to first responders.
