Yulhee reveals the reason why Choi Min Hwan took custody of the children

Former LABOUM member Yulhee revealed the reason F.T. Island's Choi Min Hwan took custody of the children after their divorce.

On January 20, Yulhee gave an update on her social media and shared why she decided to give custody of her children. On this day, Yulhee posted a photo on her Instagram with the caption, "Cute fingers and coloring skills."

The photo captured the fingers of Yulhee's child engaged in coloring. It seems that Yulhee spent time with her children over the weekend.

Yulhee married F.T. Island member Choi Min Hwan in 2018 and had one son and two daughters, but last year, after five years of marriage, she announced their divorce. The custody of the three children was agreed to be held by Choi Min Hwan.

Facing criticism for the father taking custody, Yulhee explained, "Considering realistic issues and minimizing psychological discomfort as much as possible, it is appropriate for the children to live in the space where they have been living so far, so we decided that it is correct for the dad to take care of them."

She continued, "I also meet my children frequently to ensure that the mother's absence is not strongly felt. It was a difficult decision made for each other's happiness after many conversations, and I hope you watch over it with warm eyes."

Korean netizens commented, "Whatever the reason, I never seen anyone let the dad take full custody," "I think she has more reasons why she gave up custody. I think the biggest environmental change would be for the mother to leave their lives," "It's because the dad can take care of the kids," "I think it's fine that the dad would take good care of the kids," "Because the dad has an income and can take care of the kids," and "Why do I feel like she is a very careless character. Like she doesn't think too deeply about things."

For some context: Joint custody is rare in S. Korea, it is seen as difficult for the kids, especially if the parents have disagreements (which they probably do if they're divorcing). Alimony (payment to the spouse, like if the wife took care of the house/family instead of developing her career) typically isn't granted at all in Korean courts. Child support is, but there's been a lot of problems with enforcing it in the past. I believe there's been some laws passed in recent years that should improve the situation, but she may not have wanted to count on it. Women in general earn a lot less than men in S. Korea. In this case, he has an established career and probably a lot of savings. She doesn't. If she took the kids, everyone in the country would know her as a single mother and she might not be able to get a job at all, because there is a big stigma/expectation that she would be busy with her kids and not be able to work well. It sucks, but I think she did what she felt she had to do for the good of the kids.
