Starting Wednesday, there is a chance that your favorite songs, including K-pop, will be removed from TikTok.
According to various media outlets on January 31, Universal Music Group has been in negotiation with TikTok over the compensation for the artists and songwriters on the platform.
According to NBC News, Universal Music Group stated, "It would pull its tracks because of a lack of compensation for artists and songwriters" and added, "TikTok proposed paying our artists and songwriters at a rate that is a fraction of the rate that similarly situated major social platforms pay."
Therefore, the Universal Music Group plans to remove popular tracks from the platform unless an agreement is met with TikTok.
This means that TikTok users will no longer be able to use popular music from various artists such as Taylor Swift, Drake, Olivia Rodrigo, and more. Also, many K-pop artists are signed under Universal Music Group for overseas promotions. Therefore, music from K-pop artists such as BTS, Seventeen, BLACKPINK, Stray Kids, and more will no longer be available on TikTok.
Korean netizens commented, "That's really bad," "Things are looking bad for TikTok," "I don't use TikTok, so it doesn't affect me," "I wish through this, dance challenge would stop," "I think people don't really need music to make TikTok videos," "I'm pretty sure they would resolve this," "TikTok is a Chinese company, and they're being cheap that's why Universal Music Group is pulling out the music," and "So you can't use the music at all?"
TikTok is pure shit
