SM Entertainment announced that they will provide payment records of EXO members Baekhyun, Xiumin, and Chen.
On the morning of June 5th KST, SM Entertainment announced that they will provide copies of earnings and payment records of EXO- CBX members as long as their side promises not to use the record for any other inappropriate purposes.
Following is SM Entertainment's statement in full:
"Hello, this is SM Entertainment. We are writing to share our decision after much consideration in response to the recent request from Byun Baek Hyun, Kim Jong Dae, and Kim Min Seok (hereinafter referred to as "the three artists").
1. Payment data is confidential information that cannot be disclosed to third parties
- In the case of a group, it contains the information of other members, which requires additional care.
Payment data contains sensitive information about each artist's activity details, payment rates, methods, and contract down payments, which is confidential information that cannot be disclosed to third parties such as our competitors. Further, in the case of a group, the information of other members may also be exposed, which requires added scrutiny of confidentiality.
From the beginning, we have consistently provided our artists with the opportunity to view the settlement history, and in fact, there have been artists who have questioned or commented on the payment record and requested additional explanations. We have always provided sufficient explanations in such cases.
2. Claims by the representatives of the three artists
- Repeated requests for copies of the data without confirming that there is no third-party involvement
- Publicized that there is no third-party involvement in the media without consulting our company
We are concerned that there may be other ulterior motives behind their action in the current situation where the artists have the opportunity to review and comment on the payment record in person but continue to request copies of the data and announce to terminate contracts, especially as there are suspicions of third party involvement.
Due to these concerns, we repeatedly sought confirmation from the representative that the three artists have not entered into any dual contracts with third parties that would violate the new contract and that the representative was only representing the three artists. But the representative remained silent.
Lately, the representative of the three artists stated to the public that there is no third-party involvement in the actions of the three artists and that the copy request of the payment data is solely the legitimate right of the three artists.
There are many internal concerns about whether the representative can be trusted and whether there is no third-party involvement despite plenty of circumstantial evidence.
3. Our decision for EXO
- Decided to provide copies of the payment materials to EXO members with their consent that the three artists and their agents will not use the data for unfair purposes.
- We will do our best not to interfere with EXO's activities.
However, after much consideration, we have decided to provide copies of the payment data to the three artists on the premise that the three artists and their representatives will not use the data for any other purposes than reviewing the settlement details. We have also explained this situation to the other EXO members and sought their consent to provide copies of the data.
Through these measures, we hope to show our sincere love and care for all members of EXO and the fans who support EXO.
Regarding the issues raised by the three artists, we are not specifically refuting individual claims despite there being multiple reports about our company. However, we would like to clarify that this is not a unilateral termination of a contract. In addition, apart from holding third parties or those who are giving incorrect advice to the three artists legally and morally liable, we will continue to negotiate to the best of our ability with the three artists who we value. We will do our best to ensure that there is no disruption to EXO's activities that fans look forward to.
Thank you."
SM knows they messed up. After the messy acquisition deal, people are paying more attention to how they handle their businesses and they don’t like it. Now their artists are thinking of leaving and they aren’t happy at all. The fact that there are still stipulations on allowing CBX or any SM artist to view their payments with the thoughts of not re signing has them mad mad. CBX lawyers have officially filed a complaint to the KFTC, so we’ll see what happens next. Shady Music Group should really be SM’s meaning.
