On March 28, former president Chun Doo Hwan's grandson, Chun Woo Won, was arrested at the Incheon International airport upon arriving in South Korea.

The police arrested Chun Woo Won, who had been exposing his family secrets and also confessed to his drug use. The drug crime investigation unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency arrested Chun Woo Won at the Incheon International Airport after he left JFK Airport in New York City.

Immediately after his arrival, Chun Woo Won stated, "I think I am blessed to have a chance to apologize to everyone who was hurt. I am sorry to be born."

On March 26, Chun Woo Won posted his flight reservation details on social media and shared that he would go to Gwangju right after arriving in Korea to pay respect to those who died. He shared, "I want to stop by the 5.18 Memorial Cultural Center and apologize to the bereaved families (of the Gwangju Democratization Movement) and to all those who suffered mental damage from this incident."

Before boarding the plane at JFK International Airport, Chun Woo Won told the Korean media outlets, "(When I was younger) I was told that May 18 was a riot and I was taught that our family was the victims."

Chun Woo Won further elaborated, "I realized (the truth) after hearing the true stories and testimonies of those who suffered during that tragedy. I want to make a proper apology and repentance through this opportunity." Meanwhile, the police received an arrest warrant from the court and are planning to investigate Chun Woo Won for drug use. The police will collect Chun Woo Won's hair and urine samples to test for drug usage and investigate the truth behind his claims that he used drugs with his acquaintances.

Meanwhile, Chun Woo Won had been exposing his family secrets starting March 13 through social media. He claimed that his family was living a luxurious lifestyle through the slush funds his grandfather had hidden. He also exposed his friends and acquaintances as being drug users. In particular, Chun Woo Won brought shock when he administered drugs during a live stream on social media. He was then taken to the hospital.
