A children's program is subject to legal sanctions after airing an episode that stated that certain celebrities who committed suicide were because of "ghosts."
The Broadcasting Deliberation Subcommittion of the Korea Communications Standards Commission held a meeting on November 15 and unanimously voted to give a warning to KBS Kids' children's program 'Witch's Room' for the episode that aired on August 27.
'Witch's Room' is a children's program that introduces ghost stories, suburban legends, and mystery stories to kids. The episode that aired on August 27 was an episode telling the "Ghost Story of the Free Spirit" and broadcast a statement made by a shaman who claimed that certain celebrities took their own lives because vengeful spirits possessed them.
After the episode aired, a complaint was filed stating that the broadcast was inappropriate for a program that is for viewers 12 or older.
The program was subject to Article 41 and Article 44 of the broadcast regulation. Commissioner Yoon Sung Ok explained to Yonhap News, "It is very inappropriate to link such an issue with ghosts and use it as content for children."
