Netizens reacted negatively after J.Y. Park stated that Wonder Girls paved the way for Stray Kids's success in the United States.
Recently, Stray Kids became the first artists under JYP Entertainment to rank #1 on the 'Billboard 200' chart with their album, 'ODDINARY'. Following their major accomplishment, J.Y. Park took to his personal Instagram and congratulated the Stray Kids members.
J.Y. Park wrote: "13 years ago when Wondergirls entered the main Billboard chart we couldn't believe it. Touring 50 cities living in a bus, personally handing out flyers...And 13 years later finally no.1.on Billboard 200. 3rd Korean artist ever...So many things go through my mind...Thank you Wondergirls and Wonderful for opening the door and paving the way. And all our artists and employees of team JYP for striving together all this time. And most of all thank you Stray Kids and Stay! Hope this is just a start!"
However, netizens were not very pleased after seeing J.Y.Park bring up Wonder Girls' past success, and seemingly implying that Wonder Girls are the ones who paved the way for K-pop artists to enter the Billboard charts. In response to J.Y. Park's Instagram post, one netizen created an online community forum post titled, "JYP is lowkey rubbing it in SM and HYBE's faces."
The netizen continued:
"1. [Wonder Girls] is the first K-pop singer to enter the main chart[?] --> This is not true. BoA entered the main 200 chart first Lolll
2. Wonder Girls opened the door? --> This is not true. To be honest, Wonder Girls were not able to succeed in America's mainstream music industry. Mainstream success was accomplished by Psy and BTS.
If entering charts mean opening the door and paving the way, then in reality Jo Yong Pil is the one who opened the door to Japan. Jo Yong Pil is the very first to enter their chart. But when you ask who opened the door to the Japanese [music] industry, we all say it's BoA or TVXQ."
Other netizens commented:
"JYP's obsession with the U.S. is really severe. BTS is also BTS, but he makes it so clear how much he must have been jealous of BLACKPINK."
"JYP can say it like this all he wants, but the main characters of Billboard that everyone remembers are BTS and BLACKPINK."
"But regardless, all Americans think BTS is the start of it all Lolll."
"Our country's people are the most obsessed about who the world's 'first' is."
"But honestly, aren't Psy, BTS, and BLACKPINK the real ones who built the Billboard career? Lolll BTS is seriously the top of top, and BLACKPINK is at rising star status."
"What J.Y. Park has always wanted is the U.S. market, and seeing Bang Si Hyuk, who worked under him, rising in control, it just looks like he wants to emphasize that his own artists are the first ones to enter the main charts... But it makes me think if it even matters who's first or not...Regardless, the artists that everyone in the whole country acknowledges are Psy, BTS, and BLACKPINK."
Yeah. This looks like the arguments of biased teenagers. For JYPE, of course it’s Wonder Girls who paved the way. The company learned a lot of lessons. The same way that SM loves Boa and YG Loves BIGBANG, it’s crazy that Wonder Girls don’t get that kind of credit or that their hard work is discredited nowadays.
