A netizen explains NCT 127's Hanteo-Gaon sales gap + Why Kpop groups can't chart on Billboard other than Big Hit's groups

source: Pann

On September 17th, NCT 127 released their 3rd full album Sticker. Although they sold 761K copies on the 1st day of release on Hanteo, the sales dropped down significantly the next day due to the Chuseok holiday and it continued for a week until Hanteo completely stopped shipping or giving info about the sales. Currently, NCT 127 has sold 1.2M on Hanteo and 2.2M on Gaon. Although every artists' Hanteo sales are updated daily, NCT 127's was updated on September 30th, which is 3 weeks ago, 2 weeks after the release.

While fans are curious about the delayed updates, non-fans started to talk about the gap between Hanteo and Gaon sales.

Some netizens on Nate Pann explained this situation. Also wrote about why other groups can't chart high on Billboard even though they sell well in the US.

Here is the post:

"Recently, anti's make a fuss about the gap between Gaon and Hanteo.

1stly, Big Hit(HYBE) is the only Kpop company that made a deal in 2017 with the United States' and Canada's biggest retailers like Amazon and Target. Also, Weverse has become the 1st hand retailer. So, every album sale of BTS, TXT, Enyphen, and other Big Hit artists in the United States and Canada counts towards both Billboard+Gaon+Hanteo at the same time.

SM, YG, JYP, and other companies haven't made such a deal with American retailers like Amazon and Target. So, when the US fan purchases an album, it counts towards either on Gaon+Billboard or Gaon+Hanteo or only on Gaon.

This is also the reason why Big Hit artists always rank higher than the others on Billboard. For example; some time ago Stray Kids, ATEEZ, and TXT had made a comeback at nearly the same time. Their album sales were SKZ > ATEEZ > TXT but while TXT ranked high on the Billboard chart, SKZ and ATEEZ couldn't chart on Billboard. However, if you go and check Hanteo's global album sales charts, the United States is #1 for SKZ and ATEEZ and is #4 for TXT in terms of sales. This means SKZ and ATEEZ sold a lot more albums than TXT in the US but just because their companies don't have a deal with Amazon, Target, etc, they couldn't chart on Billboard. Actually, there are so many Kpop groups that are popular in the US and sell very well but their sales are counted towards either on Billboard or Hanteo. Fans have to prioritize one chart so they prefer Hanteo."

3.[+27, 0] Why are Armies pressed about this? The OP doesn't say that BTS doesn't sell in the US. They're just saying that Big Hit groups have an advantage on Billboard charts compared to the other companies' groups.

4.[+27, -15] Here we go again.

5.[+20, -26] So NCT 127 sold 1M in Europe?ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

I love how ignorant Kpop community is. People are still claiming that every Kpop groups' albums are sold on Amazon. They are, but not Billboard certified. Because they are being distributed by a 2nd party while Big Hit's is the 1st party. Additionally there is no offence against BTS. It's just stated that Big Hit groups have an advantage. The only platform counts towards Billboard for SM is SM-Global but there are limited albums+fans prioritize Hanteo as it was stated in the post. ATEEZ and SKZ are good exampleS. They don't have a strong fanbase in Asia and everyone knows that almost 90% of their sales and streams are coming from the US and Europe. I see some people trying to ignore Big Hit's deal, saying it's a Pann thread. Lol. There is an official link in the thread which confirms Big Hit's deal with the US retailers. Also this is something good. I wish every idol company care about the groups' sales numbers because it's considered important nowadays.

Well, even in this comment section, some army doesn't want to understand it...
