SUGA and his thoughts about producing, singing, and the music industry in his interview for Weverse Magazine

SUGA has been fighting for his future since the day he knew he wanted to become a musician. The journey is continuing in a victorious way, but through it, he had to overcome hardship and painful situations. One of them is the shoulder accident he got before debuting, a pain that somehow is still present these days. He continues his physical therapy after the surgery he underwent last year, although he admits to being fine.

ARMY and the talented people that work with him have recognized Suga to be a "music genius." He remains humble, putting a comparison between his musical abilities to his gaming abilities, saying he doesn't have any talents for it. SUGA talks about how he feels being at the top of the Billboard charts for 6 weeks in a row (this interview was made on July 12). He answers that he feels a lot of responsibility towards it, happiness arises of course, but he didn't sink in those emotions too deeply because they can't leave the country, and, in his own words, " there’s lots of issues in the world right now that are much more important than how well we perform on the charts." The pandemic situation is clearly dragging people, so SUGA wanted to convey a message of hope to people around the world with "Permission to Dance." Something that makes people want to keep going until the end of this pandemic. He also adds knowing about how different the future might be after all of this, but at least he hopes to live in a situation that resembles what humanity had before.

Min Yoongi is a person who pursues emotional stability, so he thinks about the pandemic as "when you lose one thing, you gain another." For him, these days had been helpful to see his family more often and, of course, to get to know himself better. In his life, there hasn't been anything too exciting or sad happening. Kang Myungseok asked him about the effects that these emotions had on him while working on music, to which he expresses that they don't have a big effect on it since he is not working on any lyrics and had been making music for a long time now. But he admits feeling good about releasing "Permission to Dance" in this kind of situation. For this single, he had worked hard in both singing and reaching some high notes, a difficult task for a rapper. He asked opinions from older musicians that he knows, and all of them suggested he sing more instead of singing better. Somehow, this advice helped. SUGA describes how singing in English was hard, too, due to the number of syllables that this language has compared to Korean, so he practiced his pronunciation a lot to make it smoother for both "Butter" and "Permission to Dance."

He talks from the point of view of a rapper or singer and as a producer. He admits that their three all-English songs: "Dynamite," "Butter," and "Permission to Dance," were the best choices for the popular [trending] field. However, there are different cultures, and musical tastes can change from one country to another, so he thinks it is important that they are a group able to send universal messages by far. This interview points out how BTS has changed their style, starting out with "No More Dream" until "Permission To Dance." SUGA explains that it is common for pop artists to mix some genres as they are growing up; he can see how hip hop style is "splitting off into different offshoots," and he mentioned listening to a lot to instrumental songs, naming German artist Hans Zimmer as someone whom he has always liked because of his orchestral songs.

When speaking about songs, the frameworks, and how he would like pop songs to be like in the future, SUGA said he insisted that the flow for "eight," the collaboration he did with IU, should be cut in half in order to not make this song as typical as any other pop song. He repeatedly states his love for hip hop and is still stubborn about the fact of creating only songs under that style. But working and being part of the pop industry has allowed him to realize the negotiation between creating music he loves or creating music that the public loves. "When I give up on something I wanted to do, I ask myself, What will I get out of this? And conversely, when I want to do something, I ask myself, What can I get out of this? That’s how I keep my balance to make it to where I am now", he says.

SUGA is fair enough to explain how his names work in his career and what use he gives to them: as an artist and member of BTS, he is SUGA. As a solo artist and rapper, he is Agust D, and as a producer, he goes with "by SUGA." While working as a producer and collaborating with other artists, he creates commercial songs because that is his job, the song does not belong to him in any way, and so this kind of job actually doesn't give him that much benefit comparing to his job as a solo artist and, obviously, as a member of BTS: "The more valuable thing I can get from it is the recognition and records the artist or the company will get with the song instead."

The feeling about being nominated at the Grammy Awards was less immediate, according to SUGA, because they couldn't be there in person and, it wasn't a huge distinction. Was the performance that made him realize that this nomination was different from the others because "is the Grammy!", but he also recalls how intimidated he used to feel back in 2017 when BTS made their first entrance at the American music industry, and how he shouldn't have felt that way, and now is the time that he is actually enjoying this accomplishes. As an artist and the path he has created alongside BTS and on his own, he talks about the importance of morality and the most needed changes of the industry and its system.

SUGA develops this thought by telling how Big Hit Entertainment is a label that listens to their artists' opinions, letting them be creative and see how far they can go by themselves, knowing to a certain degree what is the best commercially speaking. "I think the label ought to actively accommodate the artist’s views about what they can and cannot do." He points out the fact of labels putting their artists under pressure, not even explaining to them why they have to do something, just ordering them to do so, having this kind of attitude no sense at all to him. "If you just see the artist as a product, how can they do anything creative? I really think it’s very contradictory to ask the people on stage to put on an enjoyable performance when they’re experiencing neither fun nor enjoyment".

Presenting himself as a stranger and asking for "Daechwita," under Agust D, SUGA once again tells the reason behind it, which is the fact of portraying two different eras as a way of describing the two sides of BTS: hip hop artists or idols. Of course, Daechwita has a lot more meanings behind the lyrics, being most of them personal to Min Yoongi. But with this description, he is able to express his desire to keep making music with the other members as BTS while they get older. They find it nice to have a huge audience showing up in their concerts, but all they are doing now is thinking about being happy and having fun on stage.

He thinks people are happier when he is busy. SUGA wants to figure out a way of doing to do as much as he and BTS can for ARMY since they are happy whenever seeing them. That's why he makes music, the only thing he knows how to really do. As the 28-year-old Min Yoongi, he says he has nothing special to say. But this Min Yoongi is exactly everything that SUGA and Agust D needed to be where they are now. Min Yoongi is the base of it all, and so is the love for music he has.
