On March 23, KBS2's 'The Return of Superman' confirmed that TV personality Sayuri will officially join the show's cast as the first ever single-mom "superman".
Back in November of 2020, Sayuri gave birth to her son Zen after choosing to receive in vitro fertilization. The TV personality garnered attention for her decision to become a single parent without getting married, instead visiting a sperm bank in Japan (as such institutions are still illegal in South Korea).
After giving birth to her son, many netizens voiced their cheers and encouragements toward Sayuri's decision to advocate change in the currently existing "negative" climate surrounding single and/or unmarried parent homes.
Meanwhile, the ethnic background of Sayuri's son Zen also garnered attention after the TV personality went on to share glimpses of her child-raising life on YouTube. Sayuri has since explained that when she requested a donor with no prior history of smoking or alcohol use, she received a caucasian donor.
The production staff of KBS2's 'The Return of Superman' has also asked viewers to look forward to Sayuri and Zen's addition to the series.
Single moms are viewed as a such a stigma in Korea I’m glad this show is stepping out of the box to break down some of that outdated mindset.
