Kriesha Chu, solo artist who made her debut in 2017 after her appearance on Kpopstar6, updated her instagram with posts against racism and in support for justice for George Floyd.
She posted a cover of fellow Kpopstar6 contestant Lee Sungeun's cover of "Heal the World" in support for #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd as well as a quote from Nelson Mandela.
Kriesha Chu is one of the few artists in the kpop industry to mention #BlackLivesMatter or racism in general. Some of the artists who have mentioned or shown support are Got7 Mark, Momoland Nancy, JooE, Ahin, Jay Park, Former 2NE1 CL, KARD BM, Dean, Crush, and Day6 Jae. Kriesha herself is a Filipino-American, born in the Philippines and raised in California, USA. Although she is not Korean, she was able to bring new light as someone who was representing the Philippines and America in the kpop industry, and there is no doubt she had experienced discrimination through her journey and racism while she was in America.
The death of George Floyd has sparked protests and has brought more awareness to racism, police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement.
As this movement is spreading globally, it is reaching people of different backgrounds. Many kpop fans are also saying that more Kpop Idols should be supporting this movement, as black culture is seen in kpop outfits, hairstyles, and music.
What do you think about Kpop artists supporting this movement?
