According to Japanese media reports on January 5, TWICE's performance on NHK's 'Kōhaku Uta Gassen' back on December 31 ranked 6th place overall in viewer ratings among all 49 artists!
During TWICE's stage, the 'Kōhaku Uta Gassen' recorded a rating of 42.7%, as TWICE were up as the 14th artist during the second part of the music festival. TWICE performed "I Want You Back" and "BDZ", showing a significant jump from last year's performance viewer rating, which was 37.4% and 27th place overall.
In 1st place came band Southern All Stars, in 2nd place came singer/song-writer Yonezu Kenshi, and in 3rd place came veteran singer Matsutoya Yumi. 4th place went to singer/actor Hoshino Gen, and veteran idol group Arashi came in 5th.
Congratulations, TWICE!
With all those tshirt controversies of Japanese right-wing extremists against top Kpop groups and some people in the Japanese government calling to ban Kpop altogether on Japanese tv, it wouldn't really have been a surprise if many Japanese audience boycott Twice on NHK. I'm happy they gave Twice fair chance, their high ratings are really a good sign.
