On July 17, record company DCTOM, in charge of The KOXX member Shaun's solo promotions, denied the sajaegi accusations directed toward the singer/producer. The company added that they will release a more details statement later after looking into the matter.
Recently, Shaun's "Way Back Home" caused a stir online shortly after ranking #1 on various domestic music charts. The song was released back on June 27 as part of Shaun's solo EP titled 'Take', and has currently de-throned hits like Black Pink's "DDU-DU DDU-DU" and TWICE's "Dance The Night Away", raising suspicions of sajaegi. Even Shaun himself took to his Instagram and wrote, "Wha...is... this?....", expressing awe at his song's chart ranking.
According to DCTOM, "It is absolutely not sajaegi. It's true that we carried out viral marketing, but we will release more details on that matter after further examination."
While the sajaegi accusations are a hot topic of debate, there's also positive response geared toward Shaun's music among netizens, as many recognize him as the synthesizer player in the band The KOXX. The band received attention not only for their activities on MBC variety show 'Unexpected Q', but Shaun himself is widely coined as a genius DJ/producer in the music industry due to his projects with Epik High, f(x), and more. Shaun also worked with EXO for the '2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics' closing ceremony.
