Producer Shin Won Ho shared the story behind the hit drama 'Reply 1997'.
On June 20, Shin Won Ho attended the '9th EDaily World Strategy Forum' at Silla Hotel in Seoul. The producer shared about his hit drama, and revealed, "Initially, I had Lee Min Ki in mind for the lead of 'Reply 1997'. He's from Busan and he has never really fully shown himself on romance so I thought it would be impactful. There was a time when the script was written with the name Min Ki instead of the character Yoon Jae."
'Reply 1997' was Shin Won Ho's first drama. His rookie status caused difficulties with casting. Shin PD explained, "When I used to be a variety show producer, I would call an actor and they would say to me, 'I don't do variety shows' and hang up. I was hurt. Now, I was doing dramas so I confidently made the call but they said, 'I don't do cable dramas'. I was continuously rejected."
Shin PD offered the script to a top actor, however, he was left waiting. He then remembered Seo In Guk and A Pink's Eunji, who auditioned for supporting roles. Shin PD said, "I didn't even know A Pink then. There were 8 members so I thought they were Eight Pink."
After a week-long discussion with scriptwriter Lee Woo Jung, they decided to use Seo In Guk and Eunji as the leads.
Shin PD said, "They both did well. 'Reply 1997' succeeded thanks to them, and that allowed 'Reply 1994', 'Reply 1988', and 'Goblin' to exist. I'm grateful to them in many ways."
