The Messiest K-Pop / Western Artist Collaboration Misfires
1.
Se7en - Girls (feat. Lil Kim)
"Girls" was supposed to be Se7en's big American debut song, but with its uninspired theme and monotonous delivery, it ended up being a death knell for his Western advancement dreams. It featured a phoned-in verse from troubled rap star Lil Kim, and the end result contained none of the charisma either artist was known for.
2.
Will.I.Am - Gettin' Dumb (feat. 2NE1)
2NE1 was the subject of Western debut discussions before they even released their first album. From the moment they popped up in their colorful Beats by Dre headphones, Western labels like Interscope had eyes on the group. This eventually resulted in a series of recording sessions with Black Eyed Peas leader Will.I.Am, documented heavily on 2NE1 TV. Although a handful of pretty cool songs were previewed, the only two that were released were this one and "Take the World On." "Gettin' Dumb" is, itself, dumb in every way. It features CL rhyming "shit" with "shit," and Dara subsequently doing a "shit" adlib. Enough said.
3.
Wonder Girls - Like Money (feat. Akon)
Wonder Girls (and label head JYP) spent quite a bit of time focusing on an American debut. They went on a tour around the country as a supporting act for the then-waning Jonas Brothers, landed a poorly reviewed TV-movie on Nickelodeon (more on that later), and even got their feet wet with American acts. The result of this was ultimately a collaboration with Akon that felt forced together, with the girls serving cliched lyrics through so many layers of Autotune voice modification software that it's hard to tell which member is singing at any given point in the song. For fans that invested time, hope, and money, this was a disappointment and a half.
4.
BoA - I Did It For Love (feat. Sean Garrett)
BoA was one of the first K-pop stars to really try breaking out in America. In the absence of major label support, SM Entertainment worked with a variety of producers and public relations companies to attempt to launch BoA as a star stateside. Alongside performances at a California gay pride parade, a Britney Spears name-dropping Access Hollywood interview, and an ill-fated foray into the dance movie world, BoA released a self titled English-language album in 2009. The record used harsh Autotune on nearly every track, and at one point even recycled a beat from an arguably racist Asian music parody ("Buddha's Delight") featured in the movie 'Music & Lyrics.' This collaboration with American producer Sean Garrett features BoA dropping nonsense couplets in between marble-mouthed verses and backup vocals from Garrett. She may have done it for love, but it's pretty clear that he did it for the check.
5.
JYJ - Ayy Girl (feat. Kanye West & Malik Yusef)
The split off of JYJ from original group TVXQ was very difficult for K-pop fans all over the globe, but they found hope for a new beginning in the form of JYJ's (re) debut. For many, the idea that the group was making an impact with an international tour and English-language album held promise. Just think - with TVXQ being the biggest K-pop group in the world at the time, and the Hallyu wave rising to a fever pitch, they would surely be instant megastars with the right material! Unfortunately, they didn't get the right material. This bizarre music video was apparently too embarrassing for its guest stars to participate in, which is a shame given Kanye West's affinity for Asian pop culture. The fact that Kanye is on this song should have made it simply "fire," but instead, we got what sounded like a random leftover verse alongside JYJ audibly struggling to emote in English.
6.
Wonder Girls - The DJ Is Mine (feat. School Gyrlz)
How unfortunate that Wonder Girls managed to make this list twice! For a group with so much legendary material, their stateside debut left a bad taste in the mouths of many. This track was from their legendary made-for-Nickelodeon movie with another group known as School Gyrlz. Though it made a clear attempt to keep up with trends by using dubstep production, the end result was a noisy and over-crowded arrangement. The way the girls sing on this one makes it seem like they were trying desperately to escape the recording session.
7.
PSY - Hangover (feat. Snoop Dogg)
PSY's "Hangover" is simply vile. It makes the listener feel like they have a hangover without any alcohol. It's extremely repetitive, with an Autotuned hook that sounds a little bit like someone with a cold singing. Snoop Dogg had the good sportsmanship and sense of humor to appear in the video, which is certainly worth a watch from a comedic standpoint, but his verse is "bluntly" uninspired.
