Things are only getting stranger and stranger as episode 10 of 'The Legend of The Blue Sea' revealed a plot twist most people would never expect.
While the drama seemed to be stuck in a place in the past, 'The Legend of The Blue Sea' finally put the peddle to the metal and went all out in providing content that left fans in utter shock each and every time!
Jo Nam Doo is starting to get on my nerves as he plays detective for a while and calls Shim Cheong (Jun Ji Hyun) out for a lot of things. Not only does he inform Heo Joon Jae (Lee Min Ho) that her bone recovery after the car accident was more than miraculous (according to the doctors) but he also questions how she "came to Seoul knowing no one and having no skills yet she has expensive items like pearls and jade bracelets."
Leave it to a con man to sniff out something suspicious, huh? While it helps progress the plot I feel that Jo Nam Doo is not done meddling yet and he will create a huge clash in the future. If so, it will only make the character development more dynamic since he is the one who taught Heo Joon Jae everything he knows all these years.
I'm happy that Heo Joon Jae draws up some sort of suspicion and questions Jo Nam Doo as well. However, all viewers knew that, despite his efforts to defend Shim Cheong, he is just as curious as Jo Nam Doo - if not more!
Just when we felt Heo Joon Jae may finally investigate Shim Cheong's secret there is more suspense around the corner! Heo Joon Jae's old caretaker finally awoke from his coma, unable to move and speak. Honestly, he totally creeped me out as he stared with bloodshot eyes at Heo Joon Jae and began crying. Acting level 100!
Even the wife mutters eerily, "Ooh, Heo Joon Jae. He must be trying to tell you something..." *dabs away tears* If this scene, alongside those dreams with his past self warning him about Ma Dae Young weren't ominous enough for Lee Joon Jae, I don't know what is!
But that wasn't the big plot twist that had me screaming. I had my mouth on the ground when they hinted that Ma Dae Young and Kang Seo Hee (Heo Joon Jae's stepmother) were a thing! The chief of police seems to be digging deeper into Ma Dae Young's case and discovers that around the holidays he robs locations such as department stores. Thus, leading him to believe he was stealing jewelry for his boo thang. Coincidence - I think not! If this is really where the drama is heading, then I will give the ending a standing ovation for completely catching me off guard!
If there was any moment of peace in episode 10, it had to be when Heo Joon Jae teaches Shim Cheong the ways of alcohol. Yet again, Lee Min Ho has a great way of being a natural actor as he effortlessly captures the ditzy behavior of drunk men. I was awaiting another kiss scene but maybe it would have been too inappropriate so we can settle with the long hug as he mutters "Don't go" into the distance. I am sure I wasn't the only one letting out a lovely sigh when Shim Cheong mutters, "Alcohol is the greatest thing!" Oh, Soju - everyone's best friend!
Unfortunately, the drama did play with our emotions a bit as it put Heo Joon Jae in the face of danger and excitement only to ultimately go nowhere with it. While having dinner at Cha Si Ah's home in an attempt to con Ahn Jin Joo, due to the meddling efforts of Tae Oh, Heo Joon Jae abruptly leaves avoiding all chances of running into his mother and Cha Si Ah. My hypothesis was proven true that Heo Joon Jae would avoid all troubles and run out of Cha Si Ah's house with his tail between his legs.
I think it would have been better if he at least realized it was his mom there all along. It would give the drama an opening to create more tension in Heo Joon Jae's life as well as some further insight into his past and even why his mother left!
Episode 10 wasn't full of disappointments as he is still exposed to Shim Cheong as being a con artist but she too reveals her secret as Heo Joon Jae is suddenly able to hear her true voice! Because Heo Joon Jae is becoming more involved with his past life it seems the spell of the mermaid's kiss is wearing off and he is building a stronger bond not only with himself but also Shim Cheong.
However, he hasn't been using any of his hypnotic powers for a while now and I'm wondering when that will come back into play? Maybe they realized that the whole magic-wielding con man bit was too eccentric. The drama is a tad bit more realistic without it in my opinion.
Now we know for certain that only the elementary school girl and Heo Joon Jae can hear Shim Cheong's pure voice and thoughts. It almost became a problem for her but I'm sure it will be more humorous than anything in the long run.
Overall, episode 10 finally meet with all of my expectations and more. It had a great amount of climactic drama and issues that just make the inner webbings of this plot more intense. Alongside the warm, romantic moments there was an equal amount of tension between characters and their relationships that leave us in limbo. Now we wait and wonder how Heo Joon Jae and Shim Cheong will continue on in episode 11 after finally revealing their secrets to one another!
