During their comeback showcase held on October 4 for their 5th full album '1 of 1', SHINee opened up about the reservations they had regarding their 90s' retro concept.
Their title track "1 of 1" is actually a New Jack Swing genre, mixing the old, 90s' Rhythm and Blues with a more modern, hip-hop sound. To accompany the sound of their new song, SHINee took on a 90s' retro vibe for their MV as well as their comeback fashion.
On the topic, Jonghyun began by opening up with, "We utilized retro fashion and backgrounds profusely. It could be seen as a risky introduction to retro. At first, we worried whether it would come out chic or not, but because the title track is retro, we went with the retro vibe all around. We will take on retro the SHINee way. However, there's a natural feel to it, so middle school and high school students these days might wonder what it is. But because it's a different image, it'll be more noticeable."
Key added on, "We planned the choreography as an easy one that you can watch comfortably. We simplified the rhythm and enlarged our movements. But there's still a lot of movement, so it's no change from SHINee's usual, busy choreography."
Do you think SHINee managed to pull of the 90s' retro?
