MURIM SCHOOL - EPISODE 8
Soon Duk is bothered by the kiss and the intent, and so is Si Woo. Chi Ang is angry at what he sees as Si Woo's betrayal. But beyond their little dramas, the school is abuzz about the field trip, the first one in the history of the school. Soon Duk's stepmom gets a cruise ticket as a thank you gift from Chi Ang's mom, but it takes Soon Duk to convince him to take it and enjoy. Chae Yoon begins to gather more bits and pieces of his memory, and we learn it was the principal who raced into the burning house and saved Chae Yoon's daughter, fighting off mysterious attackers with swords.
The class trip turns dangerous when Wang Hao's men kidnap Soon Duk, thinking she is Sun Ah, in order to get the key to the treasure. They gain this information through a mole, the meditation instructor Bub Gong. The students race to save her: Nadet tracks her via GPS, Chi Ang and Sun Ah head into the building, calling her name, and Si Woo crashes Chi Ang's motorbike into the car carrying the kidnapped Soon Duk and rescues the girl. Chi Ang fights a hidden assailant in the room she was held in, only to be slashed in the gut and rushed to the hospital...
It's interesting to see where this show has evolved. It went from high concept action show to more of an emotional teen drama piece. Frankly, I don't feel betrayed, since I think the characters could use more dimension, and it makes the drama feel like more than just filler. This is a pretty original piece -- I haven't seen anything quite like this before, as it takes some of the tropes and turns them on their ear.
This episode turned the tension up to 11, despite the drift in concept. Wang Hao has stepped up his game to get the treasure, sending out his agents to kidnap and kill if necessary. The principal, fearing something like this, gives Sun Ah a GPS watch to keep an eye on her during the trip. Si Woo is taken aback as Chi Ang chews him out and declares their friendship over. And Chae Yoon is trying hard to find keys to his past. I like where this is going. And we're only halfway through the series run!
I like the bromance between Shi Woo and Chi Ang, though I was hoping they'd remain friends. The betrayal was something I wasn't expecting though. In 'Reply 1988,' we saw something very different -- one friend stepping aside for the sake of the other. Here, the love triangle has pitted the two boys against each other. And it's obvious she can't decide. Personally, I don't think it would be so much of a shock if she rebuffed both of them and said "I choose myself."
There are no episodes next week, so I'll miss you guys. The great thing is, if you missed any, you can binge watch to catch up. I'll see you in two weeks!
