MURIM SCHOOL - EPISODE 5
The whole school is gearing up for exams, and the boys are assigned mentors -- Si Woo gets Soon Duk, and Chi Ang is assigned to Sun Ah. Soon Duk's mother is taught to be the maid for Chi Ang's mom and recognizes Chi Ang's mom from their childhood. She takes great delight in ribbing her about it, even as the chaebol mom denies everything. The two new students are initiated into the school, but the party isn't happy for everyone, as Soon Duk loses the job that paid her way through school. The teachers go out to a restaurant and party themselves, and are appropriately punished the next morning when the principal orders curry and rice to be prepared (not a good dish for a hangover!). Chi Ang is motivated to try hard and learn, so he can be in the same class as Soon Duk while the meditation teacher works with Si Woo to break through his mental blocks related to the childhood fire, and, as he remembers, the man in the hospital reacts and spasms...
This show loves to tease you with action. That's what I learned this episode. The initiation ceremony starts out dark, with our two heroes locked in a cage and forced to draw weapons to defend themselves, steeling themselves for mortal combat -- until fireworks go off and bottles are uncorked in celebration. I love that switch up. It's not as much of a cheat as the "jump scare," since it was designed for the students to react that way. It's a great way to show off some cool moves (along with martial arts instruction) without trying to insert some contrived battle to inflate length.
Si Woo comforts Soon Duk
I'd really like to know the connection between Si Woo and the patient. It's a strange thing that the man is miles away, and yet somehow is connected to the idol's memories. They've also hinted it has something to do with the secret treasure locked away in a hidden room in the school, so now I'm really intrigued.
Chi Ang finally has a reason to work hard. The writers present an interesting contrast this episode, as apparently he still has access to his father's fortune (he rents an entire restaurant for the day to woo Soon Duk), but still dedicates himself to getting into the same class as her. It's nice to see man instead of woman be motivated by love for once.
Soon Duk marvels that Chi Ang rented the whole place
The love lines are kind of convoluted. Si Woo doesn't appear to have much interest in either Soon Duk or Sun Ah, but ends up paired off with Soon Duk a lot, much to the ire of Chi Ang. He gives her a ride to the school from Seoul, they train together, and he gives her a shoulder to cry on (literally). It's interesting, because he seems to like her as a friend, yet Chi Ang repels her most times by hitting on her. I can't wait to see which way this is going to go.
I'm still watching, and still loving it. Hopefully you guys are, too!
