10 underrated actors/actresses of the K-Drama scene
Of course most actors and actresses of K-Drama Land are widely loved, and there are quite a lot of them who have talent to boot, but which ones are being missed out on even a little bit? Check out these 10 names that deserve more love and recognition than they're getting.
(Please keep in mind that underrated doesn't mean they aren't popular or acknowledged already, rather they should be more popular or acknowledged than they are now.)
2.
Seo Kang Jun
Note the eyes, the body language.
Sure, Seo Kang Jun might be a trendy actor who is doing very well for being relatively new to the industry still, but there is not the full appreciation for how expressive simply his gaze can be when he's acting. Even in 'Dating Alone,' the members constantly commented on how hypnotic and empathic his eyes were. I was also impressed and pleasantly surprised by how he was able to change his image so far to play a short-tempered, aggressive character in the 'Cheese in the Trap' in contrast to his previous cool and chic image, proving his versatility.
3.
Hyungsik
A complicated mix of disbelief, grief, betrayal, and self-pity that will get you tearing up, too.
Hyungsik is proving himself to other actors and people in the business, but he could get more love from the public. While Siwan is basking in love, Hyungsik is relatively ignored in comparison despite also winning awards left and right and having successful dramas. His performance in 'What's With This Family' was impeccable, and then his next work 'High Society' really proved he had great chemistry and could work a believable romance with anyone regardless of genre.
4.
Kim So Yeon
Instantly from vulnerable to kicking ass.
Kim So Yeon is a veteran in the field - 22 years to be exact. She used to be much popular in her earlier days, then fell off the map for a bit, but now she's back and it's truly time to appreciate her talent. What I love most about her that I don't think others realize is her impressive versatility. She surprised me in 'Prosecutor Princess' with her quirky and airheaded performance, which was in stark contrast to her kickass role in 'Iris' and even her conniving role in 'All About Eve.'
5.
Nam Ji Hyun
Cries enough to make the desert all oasis.
While people are going goo goo ga ga over talented and adorable teen actresses Kim So Hyun and Kim Yoo Jung, they are forgetting another person who started off as a very precocious child star - Nam Ji Hyun. She won an award for her incredible acting as the younger Seon Duk in 'Queen Seon Duk,' making everyone cry with her and fight right alongside her with her believable and moving performance. She also captured the complex emotions in 'Angel Eyes' beautifully. Random fact: she's been paired up with Lee Hyun Woo so many times already ('Lobbyist,' 'The Great King Sejong,' 'Queen Seon Duk,' 'To The Beautiful You').
6.
Ji Sung
That scream gets me every time…
Everybody loves Ji Sung's performance in 'Kill Me, Heal Me,' so people might be wondering why he's here - it's because he's not loved enough! He really should've won all Daesangs. You have no idea how much work and passion he puts into his productions - he basically co-directed and ad-libbed a ton of the scenes you know and love from the drama. He's not the most underrated person on this list, but can we still shower him with more love please? Because he's amazing.
7.
Jang Na Ra
She doesn't have to do much; everything in her eyes and body language evokes pity.
Though she first jump started her career as a singer, Jang Na Ra has been in multiple hit shows, including 'Nonstop' and 'School 2013,' where she proved herself to be equally talented in acting as she was at singing. Despite her baby face and aegyo-filled voice, Jang Na Ra took on various mature roles and executed them with ease. Especially with her latest role in 'Happy Ending Again,' she should be named as the next romantic comedy queen, following Hwang Jung Eum. It's about time that Jang Na Ra gets recognized for her acting and not her never-aging face.
8.
Kim Seul Gi
Very natural, realistic flow here.
Kim Seul Gi has been making her name known as not only the hilarious, cursing girl in 'Gag Concert' but also as a talented actress, although it hasn't been that easy to shed her image. She worked hard to finally move away from all the funny roles to do things that require more acting - and she nailed every single one. She won a rookie award, and she has a surprisingly sensitive insight into her characters' feelings, which is why, although she is very beloved, she should be more respected, too.
9.
Nam Goong Min
Not everyone can do scary and attractive at the same time.
Although a much beloved actor, it doesn't seem like his acting chops get quite the recognition it deserves! No one does complex and creepy as well as Nam Goong Min does, using the cover of his sweet face before sending goosebumps with a sudden change and his steely gaze. His expression of different emotions and feelings are always layered so nothing looks simple when acted out by him.
10.
Park Bo Young
Short but effective clip.
Park Bo Young is not only adorable but also a really talented actress. I'm always impressed when someone can play two entirely different characters in the same drama, seamlessly switching back and forth without making it obvious that it's the same person. In 'Oh My Ghost,' she really gave off the feeling of being two entirely separate entities, showing that she's an amazingly versatile and flexible actress.
11.
Lee Jun Ki
SO MUCH EMOTION but packed into subtle expression for a more pointed effect.
Lee Jun Ki had his days of immense popularity back during 'King and the Clown' and 'My Girl,' but it's dwindled since and I have no idea why. The man is amazing at whatever role he does, positively dripping in charisma and a natural air that makes you feel at ease watching him act. There's no awkwardness whatsoever. He knows how to be heart-wrenching and two-faced in dramas like 'Iljimae' while doing a lot of his own stunts. His recent works have not been as good or as successful, but that doesn't mean his talent had dwindled.
i legit feel like everyone on this list became popular or were alraeady popular
