THE GIRL WHO CAN SEE SMELLS - EPISODE 8
We're finally seeing good things happen. Cho Rim is starting to recover from the amnesia, and there's some progress with our OTP. What could be better?
Moo Gak, recuperating from his wounds, helps set a trap for his would-be killer, but it fails. Afterwards, Cho Rim decides to help with Moo Gak's convalescence, staying at his house with him. Moo Gak pulls her into a kiss, which unnerves her and she leaves. Meanwhile, the cops dig up more info on the killer and begin to be suspicious of Kwon, who is on the verge of figuring out Cho Rim's real identity. Later, Kwon fixes a favorite childhood dish of hers, which she takes to Moo Gak and they eat it together. As she tastes it, she begins to remember...
Okay, so up to now I've been forgiving, but here's a plot hole big enough to drive that trailer truck through. Due to a special request, a family member's allowed to access a container that they have already cordoned off for a criminal investigation. The cops already theorized that there's something in those containers that might incriminate the killer. They're also suspicious of Chef Kwon. Moo Gak was stabbed in the lot there. So they let just anyone waltz in and retrieve things?
And we finally get the kiss we've waited for. But was it the right time? I dunno. The moment was tender enough, but it certainly took Cho Rim by surprise. That wasn't the reaction I was expecting, and Moo Gak was obviously nonplussed. For a moment, I was hoping something real and lasting was being forged. The leads are wonderful together. This (technically) isn't their first kiss, and they both like each other, so what's the problem?
Every time I think I'm being unfair to the cops, labeling them as incompetent, something comes along and proves me right. The container issue was one of them. This episode was a little uneven in that regard. They get inspiration from the weirdest things, which is nice -- it mirrors the weird thought patterns that a real person has, where the unlikeliest things bring about connections that you'd have to see inside someone's head to understand. But then, they foul up so badly with the container you wonder why they hadn't gotten fired long ago.
Whoops!
Some of you may remember my Batman comment. Though it was meant in jest, apparently I'm not too far off the mark. Mansion? Check. Secret rooms? Check. Obscenely rich? Check. The only thing Chef Kwon is missing is the flying rodent costume. Why does he have a secret room in his study? What in the world is the justification for that?
"To the batpoles, Robin!"
I'm still loving it, though. I think what saves it (a lot) is the relationship between Moo Gak and Cho Rim. Never a dull moment there, and some of the scenes are too precious. I'm more into them than the barcode murder arc.
But I've rambled way too long. What's going to happen now that she's starting to remember her past? Will she lose her power as a result? What are you guys thinking?
