'You Who Came From The Stars' responds to $600,000 suit for damages by comic book writer claiming plagiarism

And the plagiarism controversy and lawsuit continue!  The comic book writer, Kang Kyung Ok, has not yet given up plagiarism accusations against SBS's 'You Who Came From The Stars' for allegedly copying her graphic novel, 'Sul Hee.'  She has sued the production company for 600 million won (~ 600,000 USD) in damages to which HB Entertainment responded in an official statement on May 22, saying that they will be taking firm legal action.

The production company, HB Entertainment, said, "HB and Writer Park will mobilize all methods, such as criminal and civil suits, in order to firmly handle this issue.  Taking this chance, we will handle this wrongful behavior that arose through thoughtless defamatory actions and lawsuits to gain unreasonable profit.

Through Writer Kang's one-sided remark about copyright violation, Writer Park became the victim of severe defamation.  Because we had to cope with suspicions during the broadcasting period, there were many problems in the writing and production schedules, which, in turn, caused financial loss of no small size for the production and broadcasting companies.  HB and Writer Park are procuring evidentiary material and witnesses to prove that this production was in the works since 2003.  We announce that we finished preparations for all legal measures, including claims for compensation for not only the mental and physical damages we endured during this time but also the future damages in our business."

The production company also explained that on December 20, 2013, the graphic novelist claimed there were similarities between the two works without actually delineating the definite similarities, rather throwing out phrases such as "alien," "top star," and more that would make people, who were not familiar with her graphic novel's actual content, believe that the two works were very alike.  HB Entertainment also stated that the writer should have spoken up and confirmed with the production crew within the first two episodes rather than posting her thoughts onto her personal blog.  In addition, the large site that distributes her graphic novel created a controversy by revealing the name of the drama and actors without permission or any prior discussion with the production crew in order to promote the comic series.

Stay tuned for updates on this continuing plagiarism controversy.
