GABDONGI EPISODE 7
We left our hero with a gun pointed at Tae Oh's head. Mu Yeom was going to get some answers, no matter what.
The guy everyone loves to hate, Chul Geon, hasn't changed. After he shoots Mu Yeom, he actually smiles. A flashback shows us that his single-minded devotion to Il Shik meant that he would try anything to get him to confess, including promising that Mu Yeom would be taken care of if he went to prison. Mu Yeom also manages to surprise me as he invites Profiler Han to help with the case. He makes another promise: he'll stop the fifth murder, or quit the force. We can only hope.
Mu Yeom gets beat up so often, he should invest in bandages. This time, he gets shot in the head. He doesn't begrudge Chul Geon this -- I think he gives Chul Geon too much credit. True, Chul Geon didn't mean to hit him in the head, but he did aim there first before firing at Mu Yeom's gun, causing the ricochet to knock our hero out cold. Mu Yeom did say that it takes a psychopath to catch one, so perhaps he thinks Chul Geon has the best chance out of anyone to take Gab Dong down.
Tae Oh starts out sitting prettily, still confident that he won't be caught. That, of course, changes rapidly when he finds out the police have reopened his father's murder case. He plays the victim card very well, first thanking Chul Geon for stopping Mu Yeom, and later telling Maria he's hurt by the thought that he might be Gab Dong. He is jealous at the exchange between Maria and Mu Yeom about his prefrontal lobe as Mu Yeom undergoes tests for brain damage. Tae Oh even attempts to blackmail Mu Yeom at the temple, telling him someone close to him will die unless he agrees to commit the fifth murder. He casually mentions that the 5th victim in the original case was in high school. Uh oh!
Maria has another talent that I knew nothing about: sculpting. Using a police sketch, she crafts a bust of Gab Dong. She has given up her search for Gab Dong in the asylum, admitting to Chul Geon that she doesn't think he's there. She still meets with Tae Oh, though, despite Mu Yeom's warnings. I'm not entirely sure of her motivations, though. Is she drawn to Gab Dong yet frightened by Tae Oh? Maybe this all has something to do with the ordeal she went through as a child.
The writers have turned Ji Wool's crush on Mu Yeom up to eleven. She stays by his side while he recuperates, working on her web comic. She tells Maria that she will take care of him and keep him out of trouble. When Mu Yeom orders Ji Wool to stay confined to her house, she is on cloud nine because her "husband" is worried about her. As I feared, a text from Tae Oh manages to lure her out in time to see Mu Yeom back hugging Maria in her trailer. She runs off in tears, only to encounter Tae Oh with murder on his mind.
There's apparently a romance between Maria and Mu Yeom. Ji Wool completes the triangle. Tae Oh may possibly be making this a love square as he catches himself being jealous of Maria and Mu Yeom's relationship, but he can't seem to figure out what it is or why it makes him upset.
Gentleman Choi seems to know who Gab Dong is, but he's not telling. He even laughs at Chul Geon when the detective asks him to act as a spy. Gentleman Choi already talks with a mysterious inmate whose face is never seen -- and reassures him that no one knows who he is. Gentleman Choi also flat out denies being Gab Dong himself.
This show just keeps getting better and better. I despaired a bit at the beginning, as I was wondering how they were going to keep it fresh. Luckily, every time I think it's going to get repetitive or stale they always insert a scene or two to keep it fresh. Lee Joon's acting is either growing on me or he's getting better at it--one of the two. He now manages to consistently give me chills, and I look forward to being unnerved when I watch this show.
What do you guys think?
