K-pop and K-dramas coincide more frequently than you might have imagined. There's the more obvious instances of the crossover, given how many idols undertake acting. Then, of course, there are the more subtle ways K-pop seeps into K-dramas - in the form of OST's, for instance.
So let's shift our attention to K-dramas for one moment. Drama production is one of Korea's biggest exports to the international market. Sounds fair, given how readily and religiously people buy into the finished product. Whether people consume dramas for the intimate look into the Korean culture, stunning celebrities, or the unsurpassed quality of the production, the fact still stands that K-dramas have a steadfast following.
We know the rudimentary struggles for devoted K-pop fans - remember the 10 warning signs? Taking said struggles into account, it's only fair to pinpoint some of the fluctuating emotions and reactions that wash over us while watching our favorite K-dramas.
Here are some of the overlapping experiences we came up with. And as always, feel free to sympathize, roll your eyes, or commiserate! Go wild.
1) It's that day of the week, finally. You know a new episode of your K-drama will be waiting for you once you get home from school or work so frankly, there's not much that can ruin your day.
2) Sometimes you stumble across a jewel of a drama long after all the hype surrounding it has simmered down. This poses a particular threat to your health, though, because all the episodes are listed already - there's no waiting. You know as well as I that we're more than capable of finishing the entire series in one day. It's all downhill from there.
3) For the non-native speakers, subtitles are quintessential to the K-drama viewing experience. And for the people who work tirelessly to translate the dialogue in each episode, we thank you endlessly. Not to sound like a complete brat, but sometimes, we don't get subtitles fast enough. Nevertheless, you want to see what happens, so you sit there watching figures move across the screen like... (.SRT file where art thou?)
4) When anyone starts crying during the drama because of a sick plot twist, a loved one's death, or a terminal illness...
5) After waiting patiently, the male and female leads share a steamy moment. I mean, it was bound to happen after all that passive-aggressive flirting, and you saw it coming and all. But still, when they kiss for the first time, you're more or less something along the lines of this...
or this...
6) When you start watching an episode, you enter a risky agreement. You press play feeling like nothing can dampen the moment, but once that time mark at the bottom of your screen hits the midpoint, your insides start to twist and mild anxiety starts to creep up on you. The premonition is very real, and after you come to terms with the fact that the episode will soon end, everything goes dark. One week seems like it's years away.
7) When the broadcasting company is kind enough to leave you a little preview at the end of the episode...
When they choose not to...
8) When you talk about what happened in the latest episode with friends who just get it... They understand your concern, your pain, your frustration.
Then, there are those times you try to talk about what happened in the latest episode with friends who just don't get it... They'll look at you like...
9) It's a fate I wouldn't wish onto my biggest, most diabolical enemy: when someone, whether intentionally or not, ruins the ending of the drama for you... All hell breaks loose.
10) I'm hesitant to admit to this one, but while listening to the OST whilst looking out the window in your car or whilst walking alone somewhere picturesque, don't you like to pretend you're a character in that drama?
Or am I just being overly dramatic? Regardless, to whomever can relate...
