Kang You Seok began gaining recognition as IU's younger brother in the popular Netflix series 'When Life Gives You Tangerines.' In the series, he was lauded for his portrayal of Yang Eun Myeong, the childish younger brother who later shows the same resilience as his father, becoming the true head of the family.
This time, he plays another defining role in 'Resident Playbook,' solidifying his position as one of the well-recognized actors in the drama scene. In 'Resident Playbook,' Kang You Seok plays Uhm Jae Il, a doctor who used to be part of an obscure idol group. His overly dependent nature might make people say he "lacks self-awareness," yet he’s the most attentive when it comes to caring for patients. When he lectures his colleagues for their lack of consideration, every word he says is right.

The role suits Kang You Seok perfectly, with his “puppy-like” charm that craves love and affection from everyone. While he appears to be faithfully carrying out his duties, it’s clear that what he really wants is attention and validation. His eagerness to be noticed could easily become tiresome, but Kang Yoo Seok transforms it into an oddly endearing quality through his performance.
He suggests taking a “jump shot” photo with colleagues who aren't too interested in bonding, and tries to build team spirit by giving meaning to even the smallest things. Those are all part of Uhm Jae Il’s unique charm. He can be a bit much, but when people go along with his ideas, they can’t help but feel a small sense of satisfaction. Thanks to him, the OB-GYN residents, nicknamed the “Eung-ae-z,” gradually begin to feel a sense of belonging.

So far, up to episode 4 of 'Resident Playbook,' Kang Yoo Seok is the one amplifying Uhm Jae Il’s charm as the only male among the “Eung-ae-z.” He recently drew attention as Eun Myung, the younger brother of Geum Myung (played by IU), in Netflix’s breakout hit 'When Life Gives You Tangerines.' His character, immature and seeking attention away from his famous sister, finally comes to his senses when she gets married. Though he had limited screen time early on, he delivered a solid portrayal of a complex younger son by the end.
Previously, in SBS’s 'Payback,' he played a rookie prosecutor fighting against a corrupt senior. While his acting wasn’t lacking, the role was heavy, filled with legal jargon, and often placed him in scenes with veteran actors - making his tension noticeable at times.
Recently, however, in 'When Life Gives You Tangerines' and 'Resident Playbook,' he seems to have found roles that suit him perfectly, allowing his talent to shine. Especially in 'Resident Playbook,' he captures the quirky energy of a Gen Z doctor with a unique blend of charm and cheerfulness. Unlike his relatively strict and strong-willed female colleagues, his warm, friendly nature adds a soft touch that brings a smile to viewers’ faces.

A graduate of the Korea National University of Arts' Theater Department, Kang Yoo Seok is currently one of the most standout rising actors. After debuting in OCN’s 'Quiz of God: Reboot,' he built his career and gained attention through Watcha’s Light on Me. He solidified his presence with roles in Payback and Netflix’s 'Black Knight,' and gained even more popularity with 'When Life Gives You Tangerines.' Now, with 'Resident Playbook,' he’s truly blooming in both talent and charm.
With several episodes remaining, it’ll be exciting to see how Uhm Jae Il - so full of youthful impulsiveness - continues to grow. Rather than concern, there’s more to look forward to. After all, Kang Yoo Seok is sure to deliver moments that leave a lasting impression.
