Earlier this year, YG Entertainment caused a big storm in the media when it announced that it was preparing for the debut of a new girl group. Since YG serves as a home to worldwide K-pop stars such as Big Bang, 2NE1, Se7en, Tablo, and more, it came as no surprise that the group would garner massive attention.
The announcement that the group would feature more than 7 members caused a firestorm of comparisons to industry established groups such as Girls' Generation, as well as T-ara and After School, groups which recently saw the expansion of members to 9. In addition to theses comparisons, much debate is held over the stylistic and artistic direction of the group in relation to the much celebrated YG girl group, 2NE1.
While YG is currently mum on the details of the group, it is certain that the group will feature two previous 'Superstar K' contestants, Kim Eun Bi and Euna Kim. Furthermore, the unexpected photo release of mystery girl Jenny Kim of the Netherlands added to the rising anticipation for the group. Industry veterans have made the analysis that this steady flow of unannounced leaks is YG Entertainment's way of gauging the public response in order to better determine and formulate the characteristics of the group.
When 2NE1 made their debut, the public response was no less than explosive. With an energetic shout of "Nolza!", the fearsome four swept the charts with a combination of melodic and addictive sounds with powerful performances.
However, expectations are that this new girl group will employ a contrasting style to that of 2NE1's free flowing performance style. First, the large number of members that will comprise the group means that there is a need to utilize synchronized performances, a necessity to keep the stage from looking chaotic. In addition, each member will have smaller parts in order to accommodate each other, meaning that the style of music will have to be fitting for such a group dynamic.
It is for these reasons that the comparison to K-pop titans Girls Generation continue to gather steam. Questions remain over whether this new group will attempt to emulate Girls' Generation's flawless synchronization style or incorporate 2NE1's free flowing style to create a never-before-seen performance style.
One thing is for sure, and that is that the group is sure to create an increasing amount of discussion and anticipation. Whether the predictions surrounding their style or music prove to be accurate has yet to be answered.
Nevertheless, fans can expect the group to debut this summer in the midst of an increasingly competitive K-pop world!
