Renowned hit songwriter Oh Sung Hoon has sadly passed away at the age of 46.
According to the music industry on the 3rd, Oh Sung Hoon was found deceased in a recording studio early that morning. Having composed numerous ballads and established himself as a prominent hitmaker, he had been actively working on new music until recently, making the news of his sudden passing even more shocking. One industry insider expressed deep sorrow, saying, "He called me just a few days ago, asking to collaborate. I still can't believe he's gone." Oh Sung Hoon's body has been transferred toYeongdeungpo Hospital in Seoul, and funeral arrangements are currently being discussed.
Born in 1979, Oh Sung Hoon debuted in 1998 as a member of the dance group People Crew, which also included MC Mong. Initially inspired by Seo Taiji and Boys, he started his career as a dancer and became one of Korea's top b-boys through the Moonlight crew, which produced figures like Lee Joo No and Kang Won Rae. However, a knee injury and concerns about his future led him to transition into composing, where he discovered his true talent.
Appearing on the YouTube channel 'B-Boy Zealot' about three years ago, he recalled his early struggles, saying, "I quit piano lessons and practiced like I danced—16 hours a day. I applied the same dedication I had as a dancer, mastering all chords within two months. It may have taken others two months, but for me, it felt like a year."
Despite initial skepticism about his skills, with critics saying his beats sounded too "b-boyish," Oh Sung Hoon intentionally composed ballads without heavy beats—leading to his success as a ballad hitmaker.
Some of his most well-known works include:
- K.Will – 'Love 119'
- Spica – 'Remember All My Days'
- Jay Sera – 'Love Poem Confession'
- Navi – 'Heart Hurt'
- December – 'Learned Love,' 'Star Will Be,' 'Crying with My Heart'
- KCM – 'Sad Snowman'
- Shin Hye Sung – 'Age'
- MC Mong – 'The Adventure of Huckleberry Mong'
Additionally, he collaborated with top Korean artists such as Huh Gak, Chungha, Block B, Hwang Chi Yeol, Noel, Navi, Koyote, Topp Dogg, and Zia, composing numerous drama OSTs as well. Over his career, he registered more than 400 songs with the Copyright Association.
He also served as a producer for Park Hye Won (HYNN), helped discover and produce 'Singer Again 2,' and founded the label Keya Music, which includes Song Ha Ye.
His sudden passing has left the music industry in mourning, as fans and colleagues remember his immense contributions to Korean music.
