On January 10, South Korea was shocked when a 29-year-old Kang passed away in a sudden hit-and-run accident in the city of Cheongju. According to reports, Kang was walking home after buying a bag of cream breads for his pregnant wife of seven months. A white BMW hit Kang and fled the scene.
The public empathized with Kang, dubbed as the "cream bread father," and his now single mother wife.
On January 29, Huh turned himself in after his wife reported him to the police. On January 30, police told the press that Huh admitted to being intoxicated on the night of the hit-and-run. The police concluded that after drinking four bottles of soju with a colleague, Huh hit Kang while driving home.
On January 31, the Cheongju District Court issued an arrest warrant for Huh. Before Huh was escorted to the Heongdeok Police Station, he was interviewed by the press.
Huh acknowledged his crime, saying, "I've committed a grave sin and I will live my whole life apologizing to the grieving family."
Huh further explained that on the night of the hit-and-run, because he was so intoxicated, he did not realize he even ran over a person. "Although I knew I had an accident, I didn't know I hit a person," he stated. According to reports, Huh told the police that he thought he hit a statue and that he didn't realize he killed a person until four days after the event on January 14, when he read the news online.
When asked why Huh took weeks to finally turn himself in, Huh said, "After my wife persuaded me I decided to turn myself in." He continued, "Before that, I kept wanting to go to the police. It was mentally difficult and I was distressed."
Netizens did not sympathize with Huh's story as comments stated, "Shouldn't the mosaic be covering the detective's or police officers' faces? Shouldn't the world see the criminal's face?" and "If he didn't know that it was a person he hit and he found out later, why is he turning himself in now? If you think you've committed a grave sin then help the investigation, don't go hiding, and come out!"
