Singer Yoo Seung Joon, who has been banned from entering South Korea for over two decades due to draft-dodging allegations, shared a heartfelt message marking the 28th anniversary of his debut.
On April 1st, Yoo wrote on his social media, “It’s been 28 years since April 1st, 1997. The time we shared was far too short.” Recalling his journey to Korea with a bag and $400 in his pocket, he expressed gratitude and regret, “I never imagined receiving so much love—or hurting and disappointing you all so deeply.”
“I was active for about five years, and then it’s been 23 years of separation. I’m sorry I couldn’t show you a better version of myself, and that I created a reality where being a fan of mine is something people hesitate to admit. That’s all my fault,” he wrote.
Yoo continued, “We’ve changed, you and I, but I’ll never erase or forget the beautiful memories we made together. Thank you.” He concluded with hope, “Because of you, I still live as Yoo Seung Joon. I’ll keep dreaming of the day we meet again.”
In 2002, Yoo was accused of evading mandatory military service after renouncing his Korean citizenship and obtaining U.S. citizenship. This led to a ban from entering Korea. Despite multiple legal victories in court over visa denial decisions, South Korean authorities have continued to reject his attempts to return, citing national interest and public sentiment. His latest lawsuit, filed in September last year, is still ongoing.
