Wheesung's social media has gained attention following his sudden passing.
On March 10, Wheesung was discovered dead at his residence in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul. He was 43 years old. His family found him collapsed inside his home, and emergency responders arrived at the scene at approximately 6:29 PM following a report.
Upon arrival, the emergency team assessed that a significant amount of time had already passed. The police are currently investigating the exact cause of death, and no signs of forced entry or a suicide note have been found.
His agency, Tajo Entertainment, issued an official statement expressing their sorrow: "We are deeply heartbroken and devastated to deliver this tragic news. On March 10, our artist Wheesung passed away. He was found in a state of cardiac arrest at his home in Seoul and was pronounced deceased."
On March 6, he uploaded a selfie on Instagram with the caption, "Diet complete. See you on March 15." Wheesung had been scheduled to hold a joint concert titled 'The Story' with singer KCM at the EXCO Auditorium in Daegu on March 15.
Last year, Wheesung faced rumors regarding plastic surgery and health issues after posting photos where his face appeared swollen.
In response, he clarified, "I gained weight and am currently on a diet," revealing that he had lost 17kg (37 lbs) within a month and planned to shed an additional 10kg (22 lbs). At the time, he shared his diet regimen, which included chicken breast, salad without dressing, and almonds.
Meanwhile, Wheesung had a history of legal issues related to drug use. In 2021, he was convicted of illegally administering the psychoactive sedative propofol and received a one-year prison sentence, suspended for two years. Additionally, in March and April of 2020, he was found unconscious in Songpa-gu and Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, after injecting etomidate, a general anesthetic. Etomidate is primarily used as an intravenous anesthetic for inducing unconsciousness. Its effects begin within 30 to 60 seconds, and due to its minimal impact on blood pressure, it is commonly used for emergency procedures or general anesthesia, particularly in patients with unstable cardiovascular conditions. However, side effects can include decreased cortisol secretion, muscle spasms, and nausea. At the time of Wheesung’s incidents, etomidate was not classified as a controlled substance. However, on February 28 of this year, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced an amendment to the Narcotics Control Act, reclassifying etomidate and six other substances as narcotics or psychotropic drugs.
