[INTERVIEW] UNIS hopes to give strength to fans with their second mini-album 'SWICY'

Fresh off two captivating releases last year, 'WE UNIS' and 'CURIOUS,' that helped them make a name for themselves in the industry, UNIS continues to carry that momentum this year, starting strong with 'SWICY.'

With their second mini-album, 'SWICY,' UNIS introduces their own "swicy" sound – a blend of sweet and spicy. The release features five tracks: the title track "SWICY," alongside B-sides "From a seed called 'Hey, what's up?'," "DDANG!," "Good Feeling," and "Spring Rain."

Ahead of 'SWICY's release, allkpop had the opportunity to catch up with the members about the mini-album and their standout tracks. Read our second exclusive interview with UNIS below!

allkpop: How does it feel to come back with your second mini-album ‘SWICY’?

GEHLEE: I'm so hyped for ‘SWICY’! I feel like we're really starting off the year great with this project~ We worked super hard with everyone behind the scenes and we're so thankful for all the effort everyone's put into this, so we hope you all like it!

allkpop: Tell us more about the album and the message you want to convey with it to the listeners.

HYEONJU: ‘SWICY’ is an album that shows UNIS’s most lively, cute, and refreshing side. I want to give strength to EverAfter (UNIS fandom name) by listening to UNIS’s unique young energy.

allkpop: Since the title means “sweet and spicy,” which of the two do each of the members prefer?

HYEONJU: I love sweets more!

NANA: I love sweets too!

GEHLEE: I'm definitely a sweet tooth. But that doesn't mean that I can't enjoy a spicy snack here and there.

KOTOKO: I can’t eat spicy foods so I prefer sweets.

YUNHA: Because I love bread, I like sweets!

ELISIA: I prefer sweets but also sometimes like spicy [food]!

YOONA: UNIS are not good at eating spicy foods, so I prefer sweets more!

SEOWON: I love sweet foods more!

allkpop: Among the five tracks, which is your favorite and why?

HYEONJU: My favorite is “Spring Rain.” It fits perfectly with today’s weather, so I listen to it a lot.

NANA: I also love “Spring Rain” the most. It’s like an OST for a drama.

GEHLEE: I really, really love “Good Feeling”! I think I’m going to answer that question with “good feeling.” It's because there’s just something so captivating about our vocals on that song. Even though the members sing really well in general, there’s really just something special about “Good Feeling” so I highly recommend that song.

KOTOKO: For me, it’s “SWICY.” It’s perfect for UNIS.

YUNHA: I like “DDANG!”. I like the band sound, and the strong beat makes me feel energized.

ELISIA: Today, I’m in a “Spring Rain” kind of mood. I love spring, I love rain, I love the beat and everything. I’m just in the mood for that song right now!

YOONA: I like “Spring Rain” the most. It’s the mood that I like, and the lyrics are moving. It also makes me listen to it again and again.

SEOWON: Favorite song is “DDANG!”. My name is mentioned in the lyrics, so I feel really special about it.

allkpop: Were there any fun and memorable moments you could share with us during the album preparation?

YOONA: From the title track “SWICY,” in the lyrics, Gochujang cookie is mentioned. I first thought that they wrote it for fun. But when I searched for it on the internet, it really exists. We were all amazed by it.

GEHLEE: I tried Gochujang cookies for the first time in one of the scenes of the music video. We all tried the gochujang cookies. And after trying it, I just fell in love with the taste. It was so unique. You just have to try it!

allkpop: Are there any artists you’d love to collaborate with?

NANA: For me, it’s a Japanese artist: Mrs. Green Apple. I like them so much, and I wish to collaborate with them.

ELISIA: I want to collaborate with my favorite band The Ridleys. I think it would be a really good honor for UNIS to collaborate with them.
