Kim Cho Yeon, a former 'PRODUCE 48' contestant and member of the girl group bugAboo, recently shared an emotional update on her life after leaving the entertainment industry. After debuting with bugAboo, Kim left the group just a year later due to personal struggles with depression and panic disorder. Despite receiving offers to return to the industry, she made the decision to step away from idol life, prioritizing her mental health and well-being.
In a recent video titled 'From Serving at a Chinese Restaurant to Competing for the Center Spot Against 'Produce 48' Wonyoung—The Latest News of Kim Cho Yeon,' Kim spoke candidly about the challenges she faced during her brief idol career. She reflected on the overwhelming pressure and emotional toll that led to her departure. "The idol life was emotionally exhausting, and it took a huge toll on me," she shared. "I had panic attacks and felt unable to stand on stage. I even fainted on the subway due to the stress."
Kim also opened up about the constant comparison to IVE's Wonyoung during 'PRODUCE 48.' "People still recognize me from the video where I was compared to 'Wonyoung.' I get comments like, 'Isn't that the person from that comparison video?'" she said. However, despite the difficult memories, Kim praised Wonyoung’s beauty and talent, saying, "She’s incredibly pretty, and I hope she continues to do well."
Reflecting on her time as an idol, Kim admitted to feeling both sorry and proud of her efforts. "I worked so hard back then, and I feel a bit sorry for myself but also proud of how far I pushed myself. I wonder if I could ever work that hard again in the future," she shared, expressing both regret and appreciation for her determination during that time.
Kim Cho Yeon’s story is a poignant reminder of the emotional and mental struggles idols often face behind the scenes. Her decision to leave the K-pop industry and focus on her well-being serves as an inspiring example of choosing personal happiness over the pressures of fame.
