'Squid Game' season 2 failed to win an award at this year's Golden Globes. This marks the second time the series has missed out on the Best Drama Award, following the first season in 2022.
The 82nd Golden Globe Awards took place in Los Angeles on January 5. At the ceremony, the Netflix original series 'Squid Game 2' was nominated for Best Television Series - Drama category. 'Squid Game 2' was up against the historical drama 'Shōgun,' which won 18 awards at last year's Emmy Awards, as well as 'The Diplomat' (Netflix), 'Slow Horses' (Apple TV+), 'Mr. & Mrs. Smith' (Prime Video), and 'The Day of the Jackal' (Peacock).
Ultimately, 'Shōgun' took home the win but director Hwang Dong Hyuk expressed his gratitude for having 'Squid Game 2' be nominated. He shared, "I am truly thankful that a show that hasn’t even aired yet was nominated for such a prestigious award. I did my best not to disappoint the fans who loved season 1, and it seems that the Golden Globe recognized that effort first."
Korean netizens were divided over 'Squid Game 2' losing out on this year's Golden Globes. While some accepted the result as being "as expected," others noted that 'Squid Game 2' had only been released just a few weeks ago.
They commented:
"This was an expected result."
"Why did the director stubbornly keep casting T.O.P and throw away his luck? Every movie he's been in since 'Tazza' has flopped."
"It's only been a few days. Who said they would be guaranteed an award?"
"10 years of preparation for Squid Game Season 1. Rushed and hastily thrown together without a plan: Squid Game Season 2."
"It would be hard to win an award with just Season 2..."
"It wasn't at the level to receive an award. Even Season 1 didn't win. Why would no-fun Season 2 win?"
"To be honest, Season 2 isn't at the level to win an award."
"'Squid Game 2' wasn’t entertaining, so it missed out on the Golden Globe for Best Drama. 'Moving' or 'A Shop for Killers' should have won instead."
"It wasn't as good as season 1."
"There's no way Season 2 could beat 'Shōgun'."
