From GD&TOP to T5: A Look at Units produced by YG Entertainment

AKP STAFF

YG Entertainment, one of OG Big 3 South Korean entertainment companies, has been a powerhouse in the industry, nurturing K-pop legends like BIGBANG, 2NE1, and BLACKPINK. Known for its unique style, YG has also created various units that have left a significant mark on the music scene. These units allow members to showcase different aspects of their talent, experiment with new sounds, and collaborate in unique ways.

Let's delve into the units produced by YG Entertainment to date.

GD&TOP

GD & TOP is one of the most iconic subunits in K-pop history. This rapper duo from BIGBANG brought a fresh mix of rap and hip-hop, showcasing their individual talents and chemistry. Their self-titled studio album was a commercial success, and the tracks "High High," “Oh Yeah,” and "Knock Out" became instant hits.

GD X TAEYANG

GD X TAEYANG, another remarkable sub-unit from BIGBANG, proved to be highly successful, with their hit track "GOOD BOY" featuring infectious beats and a visually stunning music video. The MV highlighted the dance skills of G-Dragon and Taeyang, showcasing a side of them that fans rarely see in BIGBANG.

BOM&HI

BOM&HI was a duo project unit by YG Entertainment, consisting of iconic vocalists 2NE1’s Park Bom and Lee Hi. Releasing their holiday classic track "ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU" in December 2013, this duo brought together their unique voices to create a memorable and harmonious musical experience.

HI SUHYUN

HI SUHYUN was a delightful subunit that combined the soulful voice of Lee Hi and the sweet, melodic tone of Lee Suhyun. Their single "I’M DIFFERENT" was a charming and catchy song that showcased the vocal harmony and unique styles of the two powerful and iconic vocalists of the K-pop realm.

MOBB

MOBB, a hip-hop duo unit consisting of ‘Show Me The Money’ rappers WINNER’s Song Mino and iKON’s Bobby, is a gem for hip-hop lovers. MOBB was a thrilling combination of two powerful rappers, and their mini-album highlighted their lyrical prowess and energetic performances, enthralling fans.

Double B

Double B was a sub-unit by iKON’s rappers B.I and BOBBY. They released their energetic hip-hop track “Anthem” in 2015. As per reports by YG, the duo was gearing up for their first album with both joint and solo tracks. However, the album's release was stalled when B.I left YG and iKON in 2019.

T5

T5 is the first official sub-unit of TREASURE, featuring five TREASURE members: Jihoon, Junkyu, Yoon Jaehyuk, Doyoung, and So Junghwan. T5 debuted in June 2023 with the groovy and energetic dance song “MOVE,” which was co-composed and entirely penned down by Kim Junkyu.

CHOI HYUNSUK X HARUTO X YOSHI

TREASURE has three rappers—Choi Hyunsuk, Haruto, and Yoshi—and a unit is a must when the group has a rap line with KOMCA credits. The rapper unit has released two dynamic tracks to date: “VolKno” and “G.O.A.T.,” each exuding high energy and YG’s signature hip-hop flair.

ASAHI X HARUTO

ASAHI X HARUTO is another TREASURE unit comprising of the Japanese members of the same name. The unit is a blend of Asahi’s sweet vocal and Haruto’s rap with his deep voice. They released their track “Thank You” as a part of TREASURE’s second mini album, “The Second Step: Chapter Two.”
