Director Lee Joo Young's legal representative, Siwoo Law Firm (represented by attorney Song Young Hoon), announced on February 21 KST, "We intend to file an appeal."
Director Lee Joo Young remarked, "Today's creators operate within a system dominated by capital. There are growing concerns that this system has become predominant," they stated. "I firmly believe that the last bastion for creators is to safeguard their fundamental rights and authority within the framework of capital logic. We mustn't kill the goose that lays the golden egg. Therefore, we are pursuing an appeal."
Earlier, on February 14 KST, the Seoul Central District Court's Civil Agreement Division 61, under Chief Judge Kim Se Yong, ruled against the plaintiff in the copyright infringement lawsuit filed by Director Lee against Coupang, the operator of Coupang Play, and Content Map, a drama production company.
Coupang Play responded, stating, "The court highlighted that Director Lee failed to provide Coupang with adequate time and materials for reviewing the editing direction," and added, "The court refuted Director Lee's claim of unilateral violation of editing rights by Coupang as unfounded."
Director Lee initially produced 'Anna' as an 8-part series but filed a lawsuit in September 2022, alleging that Coupang Play had harmed the work by re-editing it into 6 parts without authorization.
In rebuttal, Coupang Play argued that despite seeking modifications in advance, Director Lee declined, prompting editing to align with the original production intent. Furthermore, the director's cut was released in August, a month following the work's launch.
'Anna' depicts the journey of the protagonist, Yumi (portrayed by Suzy), who embarks on a wholly different life due to a minor falsehood. Suzy's portrayal received positive acclaim.
